Dressing your age

oooooooh, thank you ;)

i thought you'd gone tbh, something to do with scantily clad teenagers outside st matthews :D

I got to the point, about two years ago, when I was 29, where I appreciated some of the stuff kids were wearing (ie, the short leggings with denim mini thing around then), but realised I'd feel silly wearing it, as I didn't want to feel like I was competing with teenagers, even though I look young.

I'm a bit stuck, as I can't really afford the look I'd like (sort of a bit English-eccentric boho/punky) as everyone who does it is quite expensive. I'm trying to forge a sort of look with lots of pattern and colour, and chunky shoes (as I can't do heels), boots or trainers. In fact, I guess I'm moving away from the trainers, in winter at least. I've never been able to do 'fashion', though I'm aware of it, because I've never been arsed to get it all right, and don't want to go at it half-cocked.

I think as you get older it's partly about working out what shops you really like - in my case two examples would be Desigual and Gudrun Sjoden (only available as a catalogue at the moment) and buying there or when you see stuff that's similar to there. I can't really afford to buy either at the mo, but I'm just going to wait until my birthday and ask people to buy me stuff!

same for me, but i'd also add, i just can't be arsed with the time and headspace it seems to take up....

as for the OP, i'm probably older than you and don't really find it too much of a problem tbh. short skirts for instance - i do still wear them but with flats and tights rather than bare legs and high shoes.

edit: heh, i even bored myself rigid writing that post. :D

heh, when we went out the other week weren't my first words to you "oh good, you're wearing a short skirt and you're older than me" :D made me feel much more comfortable wearing my short skirt.

This is a concept I just don't understand. Dressing your age? Wtf is that?Wear what you feel comfortable and happy in, simple as.

I bought some hi tops the other day but I think I'm too old for them and am going to take them back. I was going to wear them with skirts but I think people might snigger :(

<perks up>

eh? sorry i'm a flake. i know not wot you are on about!

tell me. xx :)

I agree that clothes can be a problem as you get older (I am 50+)

I am very lucky as I'm slim and I can still still get away with wearing the type of casual clothes I like - we don't have to dress up at work luckily! I don't own any skirts or dresses - they are just not my style. I like casual trousers, loose fit jeans, combats, sweatshirts and tshirts etc.

I shop in H&M, Gap (in the sale!) and skater type shops. I would never buy any high fashion stuff as that would look silly on me. I stick to mainly black, grey, and sludgy colours.

It is not something I really consider to be honest. I guess I already dress older than I did in my teens as I don't wear such skimpy gear but thats not an age thing, I am just working with the body I have after two children!
I think you should just work with your figure, wearing well fitting clothes you are comfortable in.
People who are slaves to fashion will worry wether its 'in' before thinking if they really like it and it suits them so I have always ignored fashion magazines ect.

Jesus, I have enough problems getting clothes as a fat bird, never mind worrying whether they're wrong for my age! :D

I've always had a problem with dressing myself. Never been one for stylishness or owt. Fortunately the male dress code of jeans and a t-shirt has a simple elegance to it, and one that I'm determined to stick to until such time as it becomes untenable.

That'll be forever then! Its not like you are suddenly gonna wear trousers and a shirt of pullover when you are older. My dad still wears jeans and t shirts and he is in his sixties.

That's the point I guess. Stuff I like, and would have felt happy wearing a few years ago, just isn't right any more. If I think something may be too young for me, it probably is. :)

I have to say, elegance is not the word that springs to mind when I think of you. No offence like. :D

I think Converse hi-tops will be just fine on you. I just bought some leopard skin pattern regular Converse. :D

I dress my age. When I was 18 I could get dressed in a matter of seconds. Now it takes ages just to bend far enough to get my socks on.

I think there are some retailers* aiming at the no-longer-young-but-not-prepared-to-wear-slacks demographic... but although their clothes have seasons and design deyail, these's much less variety of choice. they play much more safe.

*boden, monsoon, kew, white stuff (spit), oliver bonas...

the thing is, no one wants to look like a boden photo-shoot.

I think the answer is by looking at everything and then being a magpie and nicking the bits you love from wherever they happen to be (not actually nicking: probably buying, obv). So - topshop have some brilliant jackets at the moment (if you're slim) - and so a fab piece of directional design worn with 'design-neutral' basics is probably an answer.

i also think it's interesting that all the major complainants on this thread are very stylish dressers. a lot more than averagely so. it's surprising to hear that they feel things are tricky, because they always look great (and age-appropriate!)
