Dracula (BBC miniseries)

I thought the first episode took a long time to get started. It could have been edited down to about a half hour and would have worked better. The second episode was much better. Made much better use of the time.

Agree with those who love the nun. She’s fab.

Well that was a ride and a half. Cracking stuff
Are Sherlock and Doctor Who as good as that when Gatiss/Moffatt have written them?

I enjoyed this in the end... But I think some of their weaknesses come through a bit. Particularly the tendency to get a bit carried away with plot devices. In this case, it did all pull together, mostly.

In the last couple of series of Sherlock, it did not.

Have only seen the first two so far and loved them. Some unexpected scares, some good horror, some great verbal and visual humour.
BBC at it's best

The first two series of Sherlock are definitely worth watching. Series 3 probably as well, bit Series 4 probably not.

Yeah, I felt the middle episode was the best and justified it’s length, and that the first and last were a lot weaker and just felt like they were dragging and were full of filler. It probably would have been better as three hour long episodes. Or even two.

I still enjoyed it, mind.

It had me until half way into part 3, when it turned into total shit TBH.

...and insisted on his release.

No sane person would have allowed him out, you would just open the rest of the roof & see him burn in the sunlight.

We carried on watching, but that spoilt the rest of it.

Just watched the finale. Can understand the cremation scene giving people nightmares. :)
Excellent.

The second episode was great, the structure was good but the end (acknowledging the Peter Cushing/Christopher Lee homage) was a bit of a let down. It sometimes brought too much originality.

I would actually have preferred a cliff-hanger.

As a Dracula though, Claes was excellent. I'd certainly accept a (cough) coming back from the dead scenario for another series.

Just watched last one - agree with my other half it was a bit tonally jarring compared to the last two, but I still enjoyed it. Also agreed with him that scenes with Sister Agatha (in one form or another) were far and away the best.

I‘ve watched the first two episodes and I’m not a fan. Its very much of the Dr. Who school of British genre tv, which I don’t care for. It’s not terrible but it’s smart-ass rather than smart. It’s trying way too hard to please, especially when it comes to the nun incarnation of Professor Van Helsing. Is anybody really still impressed by irreverent nuns ? She constantly above any situation with a smug smile on her face, not being surprised by anything (like Dr. Who), usually guessing what will happen in advance. It’s this show‘s simplistic idea of a “strong woman”. A protagonist who isn’t ever frightened by anything feels dehumanised (in that jolly, jokey Dr. Who way which gets on my nerves) and doesn’t work in horror. Ripley in Alien is heroic because she survives on her wits despite being utterly terrified. Her fear is what makes the monster frightening for the viewer. Dracula and Van Helsing here are just walking wisecrack generators.

The second episode was better than the first, the voyage of the Demeter has a lot of potential and usually gets skipped in adaptations. There are some decent ideas there like the master-servant-wive love triangle, but I still thought it was merely ok. Not sure I’ll bother with last episode as everybody here seems to think it’s the weakest and I’m already not that impressed.

The last ep is also cursed by the visualised texts off Sherlock.

It was good post new-years drunk viewing, but I think I'd have been more critical otherwise. I just don't think Goffat are capable of telling simple stories anymore. They have to throw contrivances around to make things work, and you don't need contrivances for an original take on something. And, like as not, you end up reducing the impact of any denouement.

And I'll reiterate that it just wasn't scary. <mild spoiler I'm not going to use tags for> they use a child undead in ep 3. It should be a moment of creepiness. For someone like me, with an overactive imagination, that should stick, at least for a few days. It didn't.

In the end they see to end up with stuff that's more homage than a thing in itself.

Just finished binging on that, very much enjoyed it. A bit silly and the last episode wasn’t as good as the second but I think as long as you accept it as something a bit silly and light it’s brilliant.
