Dr Who Saturday 15th April

No one wanted to be reminded of it/him?

(& btw - that should be was)

Surely he still is the 8th Doctor, because of the time travel aspect, we don't refer to him in the past tense. He could still be in the future, travelling around in the Tardis?

(It's a long shot) :D

hmmmm.....I suppose we, might do such a thing....tho Mr Tennant shouldn't do, as he is definitely past for him....

AHH!

I hate it when a Time Travel discussion starts!
It makes my head ache :(

Now, about how utterly georgeous David tennent is....mmmn ;)

Although, I'm just a little disturbed that Dr Who is now younger than I am :o :D

Although interestingly enough, David Tennant is not the youngest actor to gain the role of the doctor. Peter Davison was still in his twenties when he made his first appearance as the Doctor while David Tennant is comfortably into his thirties

There were two main reasons, I think Paul McGann wasn't too keen on doing it, but the main reason for not having a regeneration scene from McGann into Ecclestone, was that the BBC were trying to attract a whole new generation of viewers to Doctor Who. Rather than confusing new viewers with unnecessary continuity, they decided it would be best to have a completely fresh start. That way, old viewers would already be aware of the doctors history and not need reminding of it, while new viewers could be introduced to the Doctor Who canon gradually throughout the series and not be subjected to and confused by a whole tranche of complicated continuity that they didn't necessarily need to know immediately.
Exactly right; the 1996 TV movie spent its opening third killing off Sylvester McCoy, then the next third with Paul McGann wandering round being amnesiac. The guy who was supposedly starring didn't turn up in character until well over halfway into the bloody film!

As for the costume... well, nice as it is, Russell T Davies has said one of the things he wants to avoid is having the Doctor in "fancy dress", cod-Victorian costumes. I think he's right; McGann's outfit was an American producer's idea of what an eccentric Brit would wear...

To quote the first doctor talking about the 2nd and third doctors (roughly) "hmph, just as I expected, a dandy and a clown!"

The wiki entry has McGann down as the Doctor who fought the Time War. It works with the continuity of the series.

:)

I'm not sure if that's been confirmed in any official capacity, although I could be wrong. Might just be a fan attempting to create his own timeline or something :D

E2A: but yes, you're right, it does kinda fit in with the continuity of the series

I love David Tennant's outfit! It's perfect. But they've had two modern, ordinarily dressed doctors in a row now. I think they could afford to go foppish for the next one! It'll get boring otherwise.
Not that I want there to be a next one for quite some time yet.

Wasn't there some stories on bbc.co.uk, voiced by Richard E Grant about the 8th Doctor and the time war? I could be wrong though

I agree, it was a great outfit... not too sure about Mark Gatiss being the next doctor though, considering he's already been involved in the series by writing a few episodes. Plus there was that Doctor Who spoof he did which although was tremendously funny, sort of rules him out of it :D
can we not?

speculate on the next doctor, that is...

we're keeping mr tennant for a long time, I hope... :o

He'd better stay! For ages. We need some constants in our lives godammit.

You mean we need a good-looking man on the telly on a Saturday night!

Or is that just me? :o

Yeah, I hope so too, great actor and just the kind of person that Doctor Who needs. Speculation's all good, but I'd be highly surprised if Mark Gatiss was the next Doctor, going on what I've heard from people close to the series. (I agree he'd be a great Doctor though :D)

I rather enjoyed some of the make up and monsters on set of the last series, but found it hard to watch with the titillating soap opera type side storylines involving innuendo and romance. I hear this series is going to be much worse, and that there might even be a kissing scene with the Doctor and his assistant. Rumour has it that the Producer of this shower of pointless drivel wanted the Doctor to cop off with a bird and a bloke in the last series, and that this may well happen in this one.

But who cares? An outdated geeky sci fi programme reinvented into soap opera allowing the Producer to fit in his obsession with sexuality and cod spiritualism, and the dreary one dimensional world that has surrounded his writing for years, is not my cup of tea, but there must be plenty of white middle class lib types and professional gay men who can get some kind of a kick out of it.

We'll put you down as a "Don't Know" then? :D

cheers for that NBN, looks good and/or potentially naff - the line that dr who should always try and tread IMO.

I hope the have a story arc like the last series...that's what made it such a success last time..

I think the time war with the 8th doctor was a different one to the one with daleks that featured in the last series. The daleks were a small aspect of the was getting wiped out of history a couple of times and although gallifrey was destroyed (by the doctor) he later found out he had downloaded the time lords into his brain before destryoing the planet and was on his way to restoring them in the last book in the series.

Right only a few hours to go.

Ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum,
Ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum, ba-da-ba-dum,
wee-ooh, wee-ooohh....

(Gets coat.)

7.15 I only hope David Tennant turns out to be able to pull this series off, IMO he'd be ll-advised to try to outdo the last Doctor as Ecclestone was the all-time Timelord champ, but if he can take it in a slghtly new direction that'll be good; anyway I'm optimistic.

what's so fantastic about the last two choices is that they were/are respected, extremely talented actors, with bags of heavyweight, demanding roles, as well as healthy and varied careers behind them.

I don't think I can say that about any of the other doctors i ever watched (unless we count McGann - but I only ever watched the first 30 mins of that film, before i turned it off in disgust).

Very true - I still remember Ecclestone's mesmerising performance as the depressed skinhead serial killer in Cracker; and he played a very powerful dark role with subterranean depth in Shallow Grave.

The relationship between himself and Rose (and even Jack!) always had an interesting edge to it - ah well I have my cardboard tardis with those DVDs, now it's time for a draught of Tennants.
