well the story goes that David Tennant is actually a massive fan of doctor who, and even before he got the part was able to do such things as name every single episode in order since 1963 etc... Well he also happens to own every single piece of Doctor Who merchandise ever (probably) including all the videos, dvds, books etc. A little while ago, after getting the part of the doctor, he brought a new lady friend back to his flat, who upon seeing all this Doctor Who merchandise and examples of geekdom scattered around the flat asked, "Oh, I expect the BBC gave you all this stuff so you could research the role, didn't they?" David, not wishing to shatter the poor girls illusions simply confirmed her claims saying something along the lines of "yes, that's right, it's all just for research" thus hiding his sad geeky tendencies![]()

it doesn't count as what? there have been some much shitter Doctor Who episodes than the TV movie, The Twin Dilemma, or Timelash for examplebelboid said:the movie doesnt count as it was a complete load of old wank
as a precedent for anything.Tedix said:it doesn't count as what?
so do all the crap stories not count as a precedent for anything? If you've got some watertight argument for it not being canonical then I'd like to hear it, but basing your argument on it being crap is a bit shit because there are far worse Doctor Who stories out there than the TV movie...belboid said:as a precedent for anything.
I agree, it was a great outfit... not too sure about Mark Gatiss being the next doctor though, considering he's already been involved in the series by writing a few episodes. Plus there was that Doctor Who spoof he did which although was tremendously funny, sort of rules him out of itzoooo said:The Doctor had a great outfit in the movie. They should definitely bring that back for the next doctor.
(Who should be Mark Gatiss.)

The vast majority of DW sites and articles I've seen don't count McGann as one of the 'Doctors' (including some which count Cushing, which is obviously silly). It's failure to follow the usual schema of the series it marks itself out as more of a spin off than part of the 'canon'.Tedix said:so do all the crap stories not count as a precedent for anything? fair enough if you don't like the Tv movie, but saying that it doesn't count as part of the canon is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. The BBC certainly recognises it (having made it in collaboration with the Americans) the writers recognise it (having written details of Paul McGann's incarnation into the new series) and the official magazine recognises it, not to mention all the official books, comic strips etc which feature Paul McGann's doctor. Most of these DW sites and articles you mention will have been written by bitter fans who didn't think the TV movie lived up to the old series and thus ridiculously refused to recognise it as being official.belboid said:The vast majority of DW sites and articles I've seen don't count McGann as one of the 'Doctors'

There were two main reasons, I think Paul McGann wasn't too keen on doing it, but the main reason for not having a regeneration scene from McGann into Ecclestone, was that the BBC were trying to attract a whole new generation of viewers to Doctor Who. Rather than confusing new viewers with unnecessary continuity, they decided it would be best to have a completely fresh start. That way, old viewers would already be aware of the doctors history and not need reminding of it, while new viewers could be introduced to the Doctor Who canon gradually throughout the series and not be subjected to and confused by a whole tranche of complicated continuity that they didn't necessarily need to know immediately.Dask said:It's a shame there was no regeneration into Ecclestone though, was a reason ever given for this?
