Dr Who Saturday 15th April

We're waiting for this funny David Tennant story!!!...
Well, I am.

Tennant's going to be so much better than Eccleston (who was ace himself). At least now if Captain Jack kisses the doctor again, it'll be... a bit more exciting.

The police box one? My sons got me that for christmas
Takes up a lot of space but it's worth it :)

I dunno if it's in a police box, but it's still

I'll have to get rid of my Buffy & South Park video boxsets to make room..

It is in a police box.

I had to strongly resist a cybermen cookie jar :(

Which episode was it where Rose encountered the Dalek, and helped it to die? I didn't imagine that one, did i?

I think it was called Dalek. Pretty sure of that in fact :)

Ok then...

well the story goes that David Tennant is actually a massive fan of doctor who, and even before he got the part was able to do such things as name every single episode in order since 1963 etc... Well he also happens to own every single piece of Doctor Who merchandise ever (probably) including all the videos, dvds, books etc. A little while ago, after getting the part of the doctor, he brought a new lady friend back to his flat, who upon seeing all this Doctor Who merchandise and examples of geekdom scattered around the flat asked, "Oh, I expect the BBC gave you all this stuff so you could research the role, didn't they?" David, not wishing to shatter the poor girls illusions simply confirmed her claims saying something along the lines of "yes, that's right, it's all just for research" thus hiding his sad geeky tendencies :D

He is divine, I have loved him since Blackpool - mind you, it was a close call in terms of David Morrisey, how could she chose? and he was great in Casanova - luckily have always watched / enjoyed Dr Who and husband is beside himself with excitiment about Saturday, so have v legitimate reasons to watch with particular avidity

I think i love him even more now, geeky blokes i have a soft spot for them :)

I rather enjoyed some of the make up and monsters on set of the last series, but found it hard to watch with the titillating soap opera type side storylines involving innuendo and romance. I hear this series is going to be much worse, and that there might even be a kissing scene with the Doctor and his assistant. Rumour has it that the Producer of this shower of pointless drivel wanted the Doctor to cop off with a bird and a bloke in the last series, and that this may well happen in this one.

But who cares? An outdated geeky sci fi programme reinvented into soap opera allowing the Producer to fit in his obsession with sexuality and cod spiritualism, and the dreary one dimensional world that has surrounded his writing for years, is not my cup of tea, but there must be plenty of white middle class lib types and professional gay men who can get some kind of a kick out of it.

Yeah black people hate doctor who...

There's apparently 'reasons' for any kissing in this series - ie Rose might not quite be 'herself' when it happens, or something.
I don't like the idea of them kissing either. It's WRONG! but I'll wait and see.

I like a bit of sexual tension, but when it was Eccleston it just felt wrong - like Buffy and Giles or something would. ::shiver::
At least Tennant doesn't look like he could be Rose's dad.
Still shouldn't happen though.

the movie doesnt count as it was a complete load of old wank
it doesn't count as what? there have been some much shitter Doctor Who episodes than the TV movie, The Twin Dilemma, or Timelash for example

The Doctor had a great outfit in the movie. They should definitely bring that back for the next doctor.
(Who should be Mark Gatiss.)

so do all the crap stories not count as a precedent for anything? If you've got some watertight argument for it not being canonical then I'd like to hear it, but basing your argument on it being crap is a bit shit because there are far worse Doctor Who stories out there than the TV movie...

I agree, it was a great outfit... not too sure about Mark Gatiss being the next doctor though, considering he's already been involved in the series by writing a few episodes. Plus there was that Doctor Who spoof he did which although was tremendously funny, sort of rules him out of it :D

Nah, that's what makes him PERFECT! Plus he's been writing Doctor Who novels for years.
And he's best buddies with Russell T Davies. He was practically born to be the doctor. :)

The vast majority of DW sites and articles I've seen don't count McGann as one of the 'Doctors' (including some which count Cushing, which is obviously silly). It's failure to follow the usual schema of the series it marks itself out as more of a spin off than part of the 'canon'.

Even if you do want to include it, for whatever reasns you may see fit, it's still a shite precedent. Akin to saying 'of course world leaders can behave like that, Adolf Hitler did it.'

fair enough if you don't like the Tv movie, but saying that it doesn't count as part of the canon is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. The BBC certainly recognises it (having made it in collaboration with the Americans) the writers recognise it (having written details of Paul McGann's incarnation into the new series) and the official magazine recognises it, not to mention all the official books, comic strips etc which feature Paul McGann's doctor. Most of these DW sites and articles you mention will have been written by bitter fans who didn't think the TV movie lived up to the old series and thus ridiculously refused to recognise it as being official.

Fwiw, I wasn't a huge fan of the TV movie, and didn't really like the Doctor's kiss either. I also didn't like its stupid claim that the doctor was half human, but then again the entire history of Doctor Who is riddled with plot holes and continuity errors so I'm not about to discount its worth on account of something that has been happening in DW for the last 43 years! :D

McGann is the 8th Doctor, Sylvester Mccoy regenerated into him.

It's a shame there was no regeneration into Ecclestone though, was a reason ever given for this?

There were two main reasons, I think Paul McGann wasn't too keen on doing it, but the main reason for not having a regeneration scene from McGann into Ecclestone, was that the BBC were trying to attract a whole new generation of viewers to Doctor Who. Rather than confusing new viewers with unnecessary continuity, they decided it would be best to have a completely fresh start. That way, old viewers would already be aware of the doctors history and not need reminding of it, while new viewers could be introduced to the Doctor Who canon gradually throughout the series and not be subjected to and confused by a whole tranche of complicated continuity that they didn't necessarily need to know immediately.
