Dowie sacked

Tbh, I don't think Jordan would have let him go with money if he thought he was being tapped up, his views on that are pretty strong. I just think Dowie didn't really know his own mind. I'm neutral towards him overall, I think it was time for a change. But it's always nice to see Charlton with egg on face.

But Jordan is not happy about him leaving with the money, hence the courtcase.

The Palace supremo is currently in the process of taking Dowie to court over his move from Selhurst Park to The Valley in the summer.

Jordan was enraged at Dowie's decision to join a club in the capital, after he wavered a clause in his contract which meant if he left for another club, they would then have to pay Palace £1 million.

Dowie had allegedly claimed he was desperate to join his family in the North West and as a consequence of his decision to stay in the south; Jordan has started legal proceedings for "fraudulent statements about his reasons for leaving the club".

Simon Jordan said:
"A lot of people say a lot of things, but I know I'm not a liar. If it goes that far [to court], and if he [Dowie] is stupid enough to take it that far, you guys [the Press] will have a field day.

"They [Charlton] are being a bit unresponsive, because apparently they haven't had a good start to the season.

"They sent me a document asking me to answer 250 questions. But they can't answer seven of mine.

"They can't win one in seven at the moment either. But the reality is that they have been set a deadline to come back with their answers.

"And when they eventually do, we'll have a little something for them."

:D :D :D

I love the way the BBC used that pic of him with an earpiece - very Stavros. SJ's now strangely supportive of Dowie - but that gave him a chance to nibble the Charlton board, so maybe not so surprising. It's personal at board level, I believe.

I used to quite like Charlton too. Even though they never forgave us for renting them a pitch every other Saturday. Ho hum.

Dowie to Luton could be a bet. Newell won't be there too long.

It's all about the timescale. Presumably Jordan didn't think that Dowie would never manage another club again, just that it would be in the north and wouldn't happen so soon. Doesn't mean that Charlton tapped him up though. I'm no legal expert but I'd say Jordan is on shaky ground. I find the writ a bit of an embarrassment tbh; Jordan stays just this side of embarrassing for me, but I still think he's a bit of a tit.

He's a complete tit! But in an entertaining way, and generally seems to have the interests of the club somewhere in his thinking. The Geoff Thomas match was a perfect example - he acted like a bit of a muppet really but took the stick in good part and at the end everyone was happy. To steal from the palace online community...

the future's bright.. our chairman's orange.

He's better than Ron anyway.

The Charlton situation seems completely bizzare to me. Dowie has a proven record but though he didn't seem to have got to grips with the job, 12 games seems nothing to sack someone who has seemingly got boundless energy and lots of fresh ideas - to then replace him with an unknown with no management experience suggests either a total personality clash or something we don't know about happening.

On a different note, I kind of don't understand why people saying things like 'souness is the only manager available' - At some point managers have to step up from lower league and I can think of a host of Championship candidates who I'd have thought of, without even mentioning anyone below that level.

At some point, people like Davies, Cotterill, Simpson will have to get their chance (and deservedly so) and the likes of Burley and Jones will get back to where they once were. I don't get this 'premiership experience' malarky that gets trotted out - it's the same fricking game after all, albeit with a larger pool of talent internationally and more media scrutiny but there is no reason on earth why a championship manager shouldn't be a good premiership manager.

I do understand that perhaps Johns Duncan or Beck wouldn't be the greatest choice, but there are loads of intelligent, tactically astute managers out there if you look beyond the premiership, commited to decent football. If peopel keep this attitude up, i.e. you need to either be a European manager or a premier league veteran to get a job, then soon the managers there will have to start managing two clubs each.

+ Steve Maclaren might be free soon, when Simon Grayson takes over England in a part time capacity. :)

The Millwall lot were gloating about all this in the pub earlier and I joined in a bit (they're older and consider things ... ;) )

One version is that Charlton were going to (have to??) cover Dowie's legal costs in the courtcase with Jordan, but may have decided to spare themselves that cost by sacking him .... combined with the club's bottom position, the exact timing of the sack may have been significant.

Is this bollocks??

It's only speculation anyway, unless someoone here has heard something more concrete ...

Yes Charlton have volunteered the services of their legal team to represent Dowie.

It's becoming increasingly clear that he is going to lose the case, so I think they have spared themselves the blushes of having a disgraced liar in charge of their bottom of the table team. Obviously a REAL PR disaster.

Its a shame they didn't give him a bit longer - then he could have got them relegated too! He is a lying cunt - and lacked tactical nous or an ability to buy good players.

Wtf are you on about ?

My post was made at 11 mins past so that's 4 mins to read the thread where I had left off, decide whether to reply to your post, double check your claim that Billy Davies was offered the job (of which I could find no evidence btw, he was certainly interviewed a few days before Dowie so I gave you the benefit of the doubt despite nothing to suggest it was offered to him, but hey lets not split hairs) and then finally make my post.

I knew Charlton supporters were a thick lot, but you are really taking the biscuit. :D

Living up to your username I see ;)

Maybe they should offer his job to the manager of their women's team. Last I heard they were doing a lot better than the men.

It's all gone a bit quiet from the Charlton fans ?

Well apart from stupid kid who pops into this thread every now and then to make himself look like a muppet. :D

May not be true any more, what's the latest on that?

Turns out Charlton have withdrawn their legal support for Dowie.

Jordan insists he still going to sue. :D

I'm actually feeling a little bit sorry for Dowie now.

Dowie still fancies a move to the north. He's thought to be interested in the Brighton job.

Christ, how many ex-Palace managers do you think we can take down at Withdean? At least Coppell was a good manager, even if we did have to stop singing one of our favourite songs about him.

What's up with Dowie then, what makes you think he's a bad manager??

CP have a very good case against dowie, I'm surprised Charlton took him on knowing that this scenario was the likily outcome. Charlton may face an FA investigation if Jordan wins in court. Peter varney is on record as saying that dowie was sacked due to an 'internal' audit. Though the probable truth is that varney and co, don't want to lose any more money than they have already invested into the club.

I don't think he's a particuarly bad manager, it's just the Palace connection. I'm no fan of the violence, but that rivalry runs deep amongst Brighton fans in a way I've noticed younger and even some older Palace fans don't quite get. I suppose so much of it was based on those classic 70's Boxing Day clashes and the thrown fiver episode that many Palace fans can no longer connect with something so long ago.

Can't say I'm impressed with the new guy. I'm sure there's nothing could help you bond with a team more than saying 'They played like rabbits caught in the headlights'!!!! That sort of comment will hardly impress the team - other managers at least try to accentuate the positives about their team.
Also, I think he's protesting too much about not having knifed Dowie in the back to get the job.
Alan Hansen makes good points here
To replace Dowie with Les Reed also appears strange. He seems a nice guy and although he has not managed a football club before you could argue there is a first time for everything. But by any standards it is a big risk.

Listening to him being interviewed on Match of the Day, Reed said a couple of things that struck me as odd. First, he said he had to get the players fit and then he said he needed to learn about the team. This man was Iain Dowie's No 2 and must surely have had some kind of responsibility for how Charlton performed this season.

Jordan is now going to sue Charlton as well as Dowie. :D

"I am disappointed we can't have Charlton still funding Iain but I will take money off both.

"I will be suing Charlton because there is a vantage point that, potentially, we might join them into the legal action, too.

"Ultimately though it was Iain who knew his contract had a £1million compensation clause and he told me a lie to get out of it."

"The huge amount of paperwork being generated is because of them. Their lawyers sent me a document asking me to answer 350 f*****g questions.

"Yet Iain and his grotty little former employers couldn't answer eight questions we wanted to know which seems to have escaped them."

Dowie will get snapped up by another club, he's a good manager with a good attitude. I think he has been a bit unlucky TBH.
