I was too young for 88/89 but free parties in late 90/93 i came accross lots of unpleasant people amongst the loved up masses. One incident i remember was a crustie type that got his face slashed at a warehouse party in Stroud 91, the Monday night at Lechlade in may 92 i remember a couple of guys walking around with macheties(sp?) slung over there shoulders. Also groups of rudeboys would be demanding money for the generator, clearly nothing to do with the organisers.
There were a couple of times at Lechlade and at Castlemorton where mugger's (taxing) had been caught by some peeps and given a large dose of Acid as punishment (think that was castlemorton) and a dude with a gun had been caught at lechlade and dealt with. The Eclipse in cov used to be very dodgy at times especially the stairs and the car park which was run by the local dealers who were a nasty bunch.
I think your ok in the middle of the dance floor with all the other munters dancing and having fun, it's when you start moving onto the outskirts, the dark corners and stairwells you get the dodgy paranoid vibes, probably so even back in 88/89 just less obvious and targetted more towards the organisors who were making pots of money at that time.
Coke and Ket have a lot to do with killing the fluffy E vibe as PK said, but with an apparent abundance of pure MDMA knocking about maybe things are changing for the better? maybe it will become the norm again to hug strangers without being made to feel like a freak. I am sure a revival is due soon. Things go in cycles
