Don't believe the hype..

TBH I find the Arctic Monkeys to be completely bland and average, with the most fake "no compromise" stance I've seen in a long time. Yet the NME bangs them on like the saviours of Brit rock. I guess it's time to pack things and move on, then.

Wasn't the singer proper full of himself, declaring that they were the future of rock music and all that? I couldn't remember a single song of theirs now if you paid me, they were really quite unremarkable and the height of meh-ness. Totally failed to back up any of the hype that surrounded them.

I don't know, I never paid attention. Which band are you referring to because it could be either of them. :D

Cliff Jones (Gay Dad) was a proper pompous twat.

and Andrew WK just came to mind...

No way. AWK fucking rules. He is one of the very few tips the NME got right in the time I read it. "I Get Wet" is one of my favourite albums of this decade.

Terris were very shit though, and to nominate another band how about Mansun? Does anyone detect a four-skinny-indie-kids theme running through this thread? :)

Were Mansun ever hyped that much? From what I remember from the NME, etc. at the time, the treatment seemed more like "People like this band, we don't know why, but we'll give them a bit of coverage to reflect that popularity."

They had a very loyal fanbase that wouldn't have been much affected by hype either way, or by the plummeting quality of the music - sort of like a Marillion for the '90s.
