Donald T'rump state visit thread

There's quite a challenge in the air for the mainstream "news".

Even many tory supporters find Trump mad / repulsive. There's also a residual streak of anti americanism among some older conservative folks, and people across the board have long been sick of us being seen as a lapdog.

How "anti establishment" does the current set-up look?

To make Theresa The Appeaser look less cringe, the spin will have to be stepped up to make Trump look more respectful.

Believe me, they will try. Perhaps less so The Graun, Indie and Mirror, but the BBC, Heil, Express, Sun and others will probably be going out to bat for President Joffrey on a more regular basis.

Could have done with being better worded of course.
From another US president.

It is not the critic who counts;..... or he who points out ... where the doer of deeds could have done them better....

I'm sure lots of people could have come up with a better, more ideologically pure petition wording. But none of them did. This bloke has got quarter of a million signatures in less than three hours. Hopefully Jezzer can take advantage of what could be a very embarrassing debate for Theresa...

I've idly Googled to see if anyone plots the number signing over time, but can't see anything obvious. It'd be quite interesting...

Yes, but the govt can just give a neutral response (as with the last one) and avoid giving it an airing. And the basis for this petition is absurd, it gives no traction for the opposition to argue from its position... Whereas one based on something like incitement to hatred or public security might at least get some discussion going.

Indeed. Its not like the Queen hasn't met misogynists or vulgar people before; she's hardly a snowflake.

And this is, in microcosm why we in the left are in a mess. The best is the enemy of the good and all that. If it's not perfect people won't compromise.

Meanwhile the right laugh all the way to government.

Depends what Trump does - the likes of the BBC arent going to spin their way out of the current shitstorm for example. Rather we are seeing May trying to compensate for her initial failure to condemn Trumps shit 'refugee' stuff by ordering the likes of Boris to call their US counterparts.

Except, this need not embarrass Mrs May: a half hour debate in the Commons on how good the Queen is at her job, anecdotes about her driving the Saudi King round Balmoral and the like

I'm not signing that. I don't give a fuck about him embarrassing the queen. I just don't want the cunt to be allowed in the country.

That's how they divide and conquer :(

Anyay, I just timed the petition and it's going up by just over 1,000 votes per minute now

Yep. Totally waste of all that energy, if the petition had used the hate speech law they'd have had something to discuss, this is just silly.

The proper aristo types will see him as vulgar and tasteless, in someways it'd be funnier to see him being sneered at by that sort because it'd piss him off a hell of a lot more than being rejected by regular people.

The likes of Alex jones will love this . He absolutely despises the likes of the royals..mocks them mercilessly ...his take on the groom of the stool is a classic in my view...probably thinks they're lizards too . It won't do trump any real harm domestically .

If someone were to nuke the palace with Trump inside that would be two birds with one stone. Three if the PM was there too. Petition fail.

Also, would solve the knotty problem of the expensive palace renovations.

It's interesting looking at the map of the Trump petition. Mid Ulster and North Antrim seem most disinterested with only 0.13% of the constituents having signed. On the mainland Boston and Skegness appear to be lowest with 0.18%. Brighton, Pavillion has over 2.5% and appears to be leading. I wonder if it's a co-incidence it's Caroline Lucas' constituency...

Erm..I don't think it would be actually necessary for the pm to be in the palace if that happened . She could be in Watford and shed still be having a bad day .

I share your reservations about the wording, but given this is the petition we have would there be a way into the debate to discuss why it would embarrass the Queen? Then you can list all his faults and keep it about that.
