Does anyone know what a London teenager means when they use the term 'doing squares'? Apparently it is some dodgy money making thing.

I have bet my daughter that I can find out exactly what it means but have had no luck at all. It is used in Lewisham but not sure if it is a London wide term.

My daughter says it has something to do with banks, though not any of the details, and that the people involved seem to have plenty of money, even though they are at sixth form college.

I though acid at first but that just got me a look of pity from both my teenagers.

I have never not been able to find out what something means and I'm guessing this is related to some kind of real fraud as my daughter and her friends have no idea what 'doing squares' actually entails.

I think turning 46 has made me extra sensitive to lack of understanding of young peoples language.

It's a sort of sweepstake with different results (squares) that you are assigned from the pool - the larger square. Something like that, my brother does them for the american football. Divide the larger square by number of players (49 squares/7 players = 7 squares each, 100 squares/10 players = 10 each etc) and winner gets the collected amount that the other 6 paid to play.

Sounds like the teens are defying anti-obesity campaigns by bingeing on classic '80s snacks. Or it could be some kind of underground quilting bee.
