Dogophobe Says Muzzle All Dogs: GG's latest gambit

I heard him thundering on about killing every staffy bull terrior on talksport a couple of days ago.

I totally loathe the guy and think he has the worst motives possible but I would bring back dog licenses and proper wardens for strays.

Round here they start running in packs and are proper scary. Where I lived before there were up to six aggressive staffies running around unsupervised.

I do question some of the breeds being kept as pets. Dobermans, rottweilers and other large aggressive breeds are guard dogs NOT family pets.

Ah bless 'im.
I was surprised to see how short he was when I attended one of his meetings.
I bet he's dwarfed by his Cuban cigars...

I guess I've been softened by having shared my home with a dog - albeit only a dear little whippet who never barked and only ever tried to bite other dogs - he nearly got me into trouble once or twice when he went for Irish wolfhounds and Rottweilers

It must be 10 years now since he died :(

GG reportedly wants to make it "compulsory to muzzle all dogs in public".

What a distortion! Doggism is a tolerant and peaceful way of life.

Fine. You can't carry uncovered firearms/air weapons in public & the vast majority of drivers have long accepted that being pissed behind the wheel is a seriously antisocial & irresponsable thing to do. They don't generally go wringing their hands when some twat ignores this & gets what they deserve. Owning a dog also carrys its risks & responsabilities & if too many owners can't face up to that, what do the rest of you expect?

Why then am I reminded of a childhood dog attack whenever I have a bath & the red welts from the bites still reappear? That owner found it acceptable to let his dog roam the area, attacking anyone it wanted. According to him, it would never hurt anyone. Also remember that it was my "fault" when the last mutt sank its teeth into my hand last year. Apparently my walking down the public riverside path was the reason, as the dog "was a bit scared around men!"

Equally, friends who have rescued & resocialised a succession of dogs into safe friendly animals (including some feared breeds, from violent, abused & fighting backgrounds) have never had a problem with muzzling them in public. They are well aware of what might happen if the animal gets spooked/threatened.

Then that's an irresponsible owner and should be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Or do you propose that all car drivers be banned because some chose to drink drive?

Either way, they now recognise that some form of restriction is benificial for the overall population.

As for irresponsable dog owners, there are all too many of them IME.

At present there's far too much tolerance of owners who let their dogs roam and I think a licence that funds proper dog wardens with powers to seize nuisance dogs and roamers is needed.

They were running around of packs of six aggressive dogs where I lived before and there was only one dog warden for the whole of the city. I think it has got a bit better here but there's too much toleration of roaming dogs and ALWAYS the assumption from the owner that 'they're harmless'.

shoot the dog and the owner
my dog gets off the lead in parks the beach or the bit of downland behind my house not on city streets or crowded beaches or crowded parks I'm lucky that i can do that.

It's sad that the animal that's been our best friend for millenia and is virtually a walking incarnation of our better nature is being demonised because of the way it is handled by idiotic humans. :(

I agree with those saying that the return of dog licensing (administered and enforced appropriately) would be a better place to start than with blanket uzzling.
