dog training

i think your point number 3 will have me walking in endless circles kabbes but i'll give it a go!
They get frustrated quite quickly, actually. It's not fun for them to have to be constantly going back on themselves. It's not fun for you either, of course, but at least you understand where you're ultimately going with it.

They key is that they need to be listening to/watching you, rather than assuming that you will always be going straight forwards. You need to be telling them where you are going, not the other way round.

hmm well pretty much everyone i've ever known who's got a dog does the rubbing noses in it thing and it seems to have worked, with fully trained happy dogs... will have a look at the other thread cheers

Never do that, the don't know why your doing it unless you catch them in the act.. A sharp ack ack whan you catch them in the act should suffice..

Get some puppy training pads for the house so he can do it in the right place if he needs to go..

Take him out every 2 hours and say 'do it' when he does give him a treat..

These things take time

Going through the same thing with a 10 week old West Highland Terrier, Mr. Scruff.

I love him, he's so cute.

Anyway, I'm putting him outside whenever there's a mishap indoors, and praise him when he does his business outside. It's not going too well on the wee front, lots of accidents. But he nearly always poos outside now.

I'm hoping things will improve further when I can start taking him for walks this weekend (had his last injections over the weekend).

I went for the noserubbing thing, but only and I mean only if I caught the dog in the act. It has to be coupled with loads of praise/treats when the dog pisses outside. I found a crate useful too. Also - outside needs to be clearly defined....no porches or bushelters or whatever.

so, oh wise dog people of urban, tell me about fleas- i bought him a flea collar but he still seems to be itching more every day so i'm guessing he's got fleas, what's the best thing to do?

also- vaccines, apparently he is fully vaccinated but there is no proof of this, which will cause big probs for getting a passport etc, anything i can do about this?

cheers! :)

if you're talking fleas and vaccines i'd take him to a vet, at the risk of stating obvious/sounding like a twat.

is that feasible?

p.s. you haven't told us his name or breed (if known) yet!!!

i went to world's grumpiest vet yesterday and they said they couldn't do anything without his vaccine card thing which he doesn't have....as for fleas i know with cats that frontline is supposed to be the best and you don't need to go to the vet for that, no?

his name is nigel haha! and no idea about breed bit of a mixture i reckon!

nigel?

i'm sorry, i can no longer contribute to this thread.

:D

we've been lucky with our dog, no sign of a flea but i can't remember what we used. i think it *was* from the vet... and the reason i suggested a vet was it made sense if you needed to talk about vaccines.

he's a (flamin!) mongrel but try a breed specific web forum for flea advice - labforums.co.uk is good.

I'll be back to this thread later. My dog has a really bad habit of pissing and shitting on the kitchen floor in the night - right next to his bed. He gets let out last thing but is basically a lazy fucker. He also pushes past me and treads on my feet etc and growls at anyone who comes near me. Basically has no idea of his palce in the pack. I'm really close to rehoming him.

sorry to here that madzone, i've obviously got no advice but hope you can sort him out! it's interesting you say "rehoming" though, i think that's one of the best things about the uk, that if you can no longer look after a dog then you can take it somewhere where it will at least have a reasonable life, even if it isn't rehomed, but here dogs are either just abandoned or taken to a really shit 'protectora' who invariably ends up killing them (even though they're not supposed to)

right, i need one more bit of advice! he's doing really well with pissing and shitting outside, but should i praise him during or after he does his business, as sometimes i seem to put him off lol! also re: the pulling thing, i've been praising him whenever he stops pulling but my praise just seems to encourage him to pull further!

how old is he madz?

with the toilet issues perhaps take some treats when he goes last and first thing. he will the start linking getting fed with those times and not in the middle of the night.

as you allude to he obviously thinks he's in charge. you need to make sure he doesn't go through doors/gates before you, tell him off when he growls (even tho he thinks he's protecting you) and praise/reward when he doesn't do these things.

(sorry if you know all this already :))

no *not* during as you'll get a situation where he's so excited to start and get praised he go as soon as he gets to the 'regular place' you'll have dog piss down the legs etc as he starts before he's assumed the position.

p.s. great to here you're both making progress! :)

p.p.s. re pulling, you need to mark out clear 'phases' in his mind.

so -

walk, walk, walk and if there's no pulling tell him to 'sit' and then praise him. off you go again and repeat.

if it's walk, walk, pull then firmly tell him 'no', get him to sit and try walking again.

a key point is to NOT use his name too much/at all. for him you saying his name is a type of reward so if he constantly hears you say 'good boy nigel' (...!) he'll pull more for you to say 'no, nigel'.

1. take off flea collar - they are shit
2. wait a week and get either frontline or stronghold * do not apply whilst there is a chance of the stuff from the flea collar still being present
3. apply

re vaccines speak to your vet. you can re vacc but diff vets have diff opinions on how long to leave between vaccs. reason your vet cant help with previous vaccs is he wont know what was administered, when it was administerd and what the batch numbers of the vaccine were. so you will have to have him revaccinated

i also recomend readng some books such as "the perfect puppy" by gwen baily and (much as i dislike her) some of jan fennels books (as a basic giude they are pretty good but IMO not great for in depth stuff and focus on pack ranking too much)

look at clicker training

I second the suggestion for Frontline and Stronghold, by the way. Or Advantage. The cats get the first and the dog the last. (Stronghold, we've found, does have some problems for them). We never get any flea problems. Frontline, in particular, is amazing. If we forget to use it for a few months and then suddenly get a flea infestation (which has happened once or twice), using it clears up the entire infestation within days.

advantage has had links to an increased rick of certain skin and bowl conditions so i would avoid it if possible.

avoid the bob martin products like the plague

we use frontline

Really? We'll knock the Advantage on the head then. I forget why we even started using it in the first place -- I think the vet recommended it.

can only speak about dogs and advantage but have been told that from a number of sources. They all carry some risk due to the nature of the products of course. if your animal isnt showwing any syptoms i wouldnt worry about it.

Ok - I've got time to talk dog now.

I don't know how old my dog is - I think he's about 5. We've had him about three years and for the entire time he's growled whenever anyone comes near me. I can't praise him when he doesn't do it because he's never not done it. I worry about the baby because he stares at her the whole time, drooling. He looks really confused when she's flailing round and crying, especially when I'm carrying her. I wonder if he thinks she's hurting me and I worry about his reaction. I never leave her alone with him because of that.

I can't abide him pushing past me, especially in doorways. Sometimes he pushes me so hard I knock into the doorframe. Again, it's bad enough on my own but when I'm carrying the baby it could be dangerous if I bang her head into the doorframe or something. I think he does it because he panics about being left behind. Also when he's walking behind me he treads on my heels and it's a struggle to get him to stay behind me, his instinct is to barge past me all the time. He's a fairly big dog (Kelpie) and he's quite strong.

Last thing at night I open the back door and let him out to the top garden. There's a small, enclosed garden up there that's pretty inacessible to us and from when he came he's done his business in there. I let him out and say 'Do a wee' and he heads off up the steps. That is until he thinks I'm not looking and he tries to sneak back down. I keep saying 'Do a wee' until he goes up there and stays there long enough to actually do anything. Thing is he's a really sneaky dog and if he thinks he can get away with anything then he'll have a go. I can't actually go up there with him so I have to trust he's actually doen his business.

We have a slate floor so no matter how much Cillit fucking Bang or bleach I use he's going to be able to smell that he's used it frequently as a toilet. It's so fucking disheartening to come down in the morning to be faced with a pile of shit floating in a piss puddle  :(

I bought a book on dog training a few years ago but I ended up giving it away because he just doesn't respond to anything it seems.

sorry to hear owning a dog isn't as fun as it should be for you :(

it's obviously not easy helping from a distance but it perhaps sounds as if some bad behaviour patterns became ingrained in his first couple of years sadly.

imo it seems like he's assumed the boss position for himself as it was probably like that with his previous owner...

with the 'pushing past' thing the best idea is to get him to sit before opening the door. then open the door and stand with him, making sure he doesn't go in. if he does then 'retrieve' and start the whole process again until he gets it that you go in first. if you can get it to the point where you're in and he's still sitting then call him in and praise/reward him. i know it sounds a fucking drag and there aren't 30 hours in a day but the only way he'll learn is through repitition.

hmm, sounds a bit cheeky. to me the way to rectify this is to go out with him to somewhere more accessible, make sure he goes and then treat him. it sounds quite convenient that he can just run off and do what he needs to, but if he isn't actually doing it then you're faced with (literally) a rude awakening in the morning.

if it only it was a case of 'BANG! and the dog shit is gone!' :D

i'll have a hunt around to see if i can find some useful stuff for you.

I can't realistically go anywhere with him that's more accessible. He's never done his business in front of me, I think he'd be freaked out tbh :D

He's a very nervous dog. When he came you couldn't get near him. He'd been outside with a load of other dogs and was definitely the bottom of the pack. It' strange that he's so pushy here.

I need Cesar Millan to come and sort him ahhhht

seriously dwen - how would you like it if someone started telling you youre a good boy and offering you biscuits while you were having a poo? :D

do not answer that

sounds like he's lacking in confidence and doesn't know what his role is.

cesar might say - "REMEMBER - exercise, discipline and affection!"

does he get much exercise?

No, he's only got one hip. He comes out and about on the farm if I'm doing something with the animals but anything more than that and he can't walk next day :(
