Does your cleaner do this...?

Sometimes, I like to don a quaint little outfit, call myself Conswayla, imagine immigration officials bursting in at any moment and run around the flat with a duster saying "so sorry Mr EastEnder, me try harder, promise!"

It's the closest I'll ever get to affording a real cleaner...:(

A question for people with cleaners: Are you in while they are cleaning, or do you make a point of being out?

Sometimes I would be in, sometimes I would be out.

If I was in, I'd usually be on here, or watching TV. We'd have shouted conversations with her in the kitchen, or cleaning the bathroom..

She once walked in and found me loading the dishwasher. I got shouted at for that.. "that's my job" - but that was right at the beginning, when I first moved in with my husband, and didn't know the routine :D

We got rid of her in the end because she was too unreliable. Wouldn't turn up for weeks, etc.. I got fed up with leaving her all the money out of my purse, going to the cashpoint to replace it, then returning home to find she hadn't been round..

I always used to spend both lots then, and it was costing me a fortune :D

See this is why when my cleaning contractor brother offers me home jobs I won't take them. Either the houseowner is present and causing hassle by just being there and trying to help or is away but has left grievous mess that is outside of my remit but annoys me by it's messiness. I'll take his BOING! crime scene clean-ups at four AM or his endless building site jobs where you return again and again even though they promised the mastic man/Carpenter/Electrician/etc would not make a mess but did and now you are wanted back. But god save me from domestic jobs

<but has left grievous mess that is outside of my remit but annoys me by it's messiness. >

So who decides what falls within the remit? Is it some sort of unwritten rule that only cleaners & those that they clean for are aware of? Is it agreed between cleaner & cleanee (so to speak) at the start? Is it always basically the same or does it vary?

*is suddenly more aware of cleaning etiquette ignorance* :(

When I worked on a housing estate there were pretty clear rules about what cleaners would and wouldn't do. A 'deep clean' was sometimes required for bodily waste and stuff.

We had a special squad to call out for dead bodies / bodily carnage. Fucking grim job that ... I know for a fact that they cleaned up what was left of a bloke that jumped from the 26th floor once. :(

That's what I told my teacher I wanted to do once.

That's probably not what mysterygirl was asking, though, I've just realised.

LOL no it was more about your more general cleaning while you're in/not in & what it covers (like dusting/mopping floors/ironing/putting washing machines on/loading the dishwasher/chucking out important papers/cleaning up cat shit) than dead people, i kinda figure that bits more specialised & less common ;)

The areas and tasks are set before contract is signed ime. But that doesn't stop me wanting to go on clean mania and sort out stuff beyond my remit:mad:

:o

I ought to go to bed.

Internet + wine = moron. :D

For me tiredness alone will do it, I woudn't worry about it if I were you. :D

So..... do people really get upset if you do stuff that's 'outside your remit'? I'd just be grateful for all the help I could get I think :o

My cleaner (Léon) has been total waste of money.

Bush alive
Murdoch alive
Howard (Halifax) alive

Fuck knows what I am paying the twat for.
Luckily he never asked for money, just a plant and some milk or something the fucking sucker.

I expect he is waiting for you to do the 'hit's' so that he can get on with the 'cleaning'.

My friend has a cleaner who refuses to clean unless the place is tidy first. She will not vacuum the floor until someone has made sure there is nothing on it, she doesn't want to bend down! About the only thing she actually does is put dishes in the dishwasher. She really needs sacking.

I have no problems with the staff, in fact they are so discreet I have only met them a couple of times this year. I arrive and everything is cleaned, perfect no need to see them.

There was never any contract with us.

She did the things she would do in her own house.. well, maybe not quite. She never cleaned the skirting boards, for example, or the light switches - the sort of things I would pay attention to.

She would tidy up paperwork, but would never throw any away. Not only was she our cleaner, she was also my husband's company secretary!

The worst thing she had to do was clean the toilet... even if she only did that, I'd have been happy - cleaning the toilet is my least favourite job

Molly Maid, a cleaning company franchise, are like that. Needless to say our 'contract' didn't last long...

We don't have an official contract as such either, I would like to think it is all based around common sense. Some things need doing weekly and she does without prompting and others like skirtings, oven deep clean and outside windows, I have to mention when I feel needs doing otherwise it would never get seen to.

The toilet is the most uncomfortable thing and does leave me quite :o

A question for people with cleaners: Are you in while they are cleaning, or do you make a point of being out?

This is interesting. Up until a couple of months ago our cleaner would finish the flat before 5pm on a Friday. No probs as Mrs Spy and myself wouldn't get home until after then. However, on one occasion I went home early while she was still there, said hello and sat down to watch the news.

We had a call a couple of days later from the agency saying that she had complained about my being there and was uncomfortable being alone in the flat with a male. Fair enough I thought, perhaps she's had a bad experience.

The real problem arose when she started turning up even later and so not being gone until after 6pm. I frequently found myself apologising when I walked in and then going to sit in the car whilst she finished off.

She couldn't come round earlier and after the 3rd or 4th time I'd had enough and got her replaced.

How much is the going rate for a cleaner/home help person? Wouldn't mind one myself - was thinking about £7ph cash in hand.

Double that and add sx quid. You're paying someone to clean not giving them a bit pocket money.

In the north of England, I'd probably do it for that. If I lived down south/ London I might want a bit more.

Saw an ad locally wanting to pay someone £5.50 an hour (ie less than the minimum wage) They can fuck off imo.

I would say yes, for sure. Especially being out of London as you are (location:M16), that's what I pay my cleaner, although my friend lives in Islington 'don't cha know' and pays his £9 + bonus if she washes his cast iron pots :hmm:

I keep thinking about putting her fee up, like having a yearly review, but then she does something to upset me and the idea passes quickly out of my head. I might do it though in November and then reduce her hour by one
