Does using super unleaded make your car go faster?

In 2012, a well known motoring program tested a number of fuels on a Golf GTi, and the highest power difference between them all was 5 BHP. Of the super fuels, the most expensive gave only 0.9BHP more despite costing an extra 10p per litre.
Lead is heavy. You'd need to look at the power to weight ratio not just the BHP. ;)

I routinley buy the cheapest supermarket petrol I can find. And will swealter in the car avoiding the air conditioning for feul efficiency purposes. Is there really a difference at 'the pump' The reason I ended up with super unleaded as I was trying to use a 5p off a litre token at sainsburgers and accidently put super in, which is 5p more expensive and therefore I saved 0p. perhaps some kind of petrol poll could be made..

That is a false economy. Done a few Edinburgh - Basingstoke trips in the last few months. If I fill up with supermarket petrol have to refuel on the way, with branded I don't . The difference in range I get is over 10% and the difference in price is not, even with the extra 5poff. I don't bother with super though, just use redex a tank or so ahead of mot

Since posting this thread I've bought a 10yr old BMW and it feels rude to put anything other than the most expensive petrol available into it..

It's lovely this thread has re-appeared from 2007 because I think of it often when at the petrol pump.

The only other thing I have to add is that my dad had a conversation at a drinks party in the south of France with a bloke who was wearing red corduroy trousers. Red trouser man loudly announced that he always uses the expensive petrol as it saves on wear and tear on the engine and you make you money back at the garage.

It's important to note that a) this insight from my father came via a conversation about red trousers not petrol and b) in my experience red trousered loudmouths at parties in the south of France tend to go on about Bently's and Jaguars but are usually seen pottering around in clapped out 25yr old Fiat uno's.
