Mobike is one, started in Manchester, now operates in Newcastle, Oxford and London.
Mobike is even shitter than Boris bikes. I looked at one a couple of days ago and can't believe anyone over about five foot nine could ride one comfortably. They're tiny.
That's me out then. And at six foot, I'm tall but not freakishly so.
The phone app makes PAYG use via a credit card relatively painless and slick, avoiding all interaction with the terminals.
I've never tried one as I'm a bike snob with my own, but I gather they're incredibly slow. Lots of them got destroyed here on launch but it seems to have settled down a bit now.
