Does anyone hear love speed garage/bassline house??

would anyone be happy to try and help those of us, like me, who know what we like just no idea what it is?

as i remember it, and someone said it up there somewhere ^^^

it came out of Jungle, rather than House. ime labelling them the 'champagne crew' is about right. they were definitley into the shinier end of things :D

me and my lot preferred the country jungle warehouse raves but i had a friend who went out with mikey b at the time (when he, creed and spoony etc. were were underground unknown djs) so i used to go up to london to some of the garage dos.

i did have a great time, cos i love dancing to garage but i preferred the rougher jungle scene.

heh, funny how different music makes you dance differently - my garage/two step dance is more shuffly and hip-wiggly. :D

eh? it never BECAME garage. People just got bored of d'n'b when it went all tech-step and they realised speed garage was loads sexier but still had that 'rush' element to it, plus it was more champagne and style, reacting to the old ruff rave style. Alot of the d'nb producers who'd learnt their programming skills already moved into the field hence Lockdown187 et al , very d'n'b track, all that amazing 2 step programming that came later was obvioulsy a progression from all that furious hardstep jungle sequencing.

eh?

it was NEVER CALLED d'n'b back in the day either :p

it was called Jungle.

i agree with everything else you say though...

Bassline house in Sheffield basically revolves around 1 club (was Niche, but due to police intervention has been Limit for a few months), 1 record shop (Studiobeats - whuich essentially sells a bit of speed garage/bassline stuff in addition to every other dance genre, but try tellin the bassline brigade that), and 1 web radio station (SubIce?) where all the local kids play.

Wouldnt really call lt a scene, more like a local curiosity.

That's about right however Limit has now in fact been renamed Niche, after the lovely local entrepreneur who owns the brand bought it out. You've also missed out the behemoth that is Reflex (record shop, club night and prolific record label, home of the notorious Big Ang) and there are also a fair few occasional events running at clubs like the Adelphi and Plug, and a sprinkling of bars in town that play bassline (not many tho, 'cos it tends to bring plenty trouble).

is it true that speed garage started out in the elephant pub near nando's in E&C? i read that somewhere. i think. i told my wife but she doesn't believe me.

i believe it started in the actual pub The Elephant - it was after-parties from the Ministry and stuff, they started pitching stuff up for the clubbers and it became speed garage. allegedly

Try listening to 1xtra
I've heard the DJs there use it a lot

Also you will know of a vocalist called Katie Pearl? The phrase is also used in relation to her vocal contributions IMIIC

:)

Heartless Crew did a cd a couple of years ago - chatting over various garage tunes, i think it's called Crisp Biscuit. any of you know it?

anyway, i've only got a burn off that my boy did for me so there's no tracklisting etc. and neither boy are about to ask at the moment...

if you know the cd i mean, can you check out tracks 2 & 4 and tell me what they are please? they're a couple of classic tracks that i want to put on a comp for my friend but i have no idea what they're called.

George Morel - Morel's Groove

Big Bird - Flava

Yeah forgot about Reflex I just saw it as quite generic, possibly due to the Big Ang connection - the 1 song she's known for got her more success once it became a trancey commercial-dance track, despite it being the main anthem for the Niche crowd.

Not seen any bassline getting played at Plug - I go there a fair bit and theres plenty of house nights in all their forms, a fair few live acts and quite a few studenty theme nights - none of which tend to attract the same crowd that would head for Niche, really.

Look luv

My initial post wasn't 100% serious anyway
I'm no way a trainspotter and grime is very far from my favourite musical genre
I do like the rhythm and grime stuff I've heard, but then I love dutty basslines and soulful vocals
I don't listen to the pirates I can't get on-line as I keep breaking the ariel on my FM radio and I don't even know what 'shower' means :o
Good for you for being so well informed though ;)

sooo over

i'm with H.dot Lou

the kids into grime etc. really don't like that 'R&G' shite - a term made up by commercial producers and radio djs as far as i can tell....

do keep up luv.

:p

another question.

every flippin garage cd i find is a vocal version - but on my old tapes i've got lots of garage tunes with mcs chatting over them with only vocal samples - rather than all the way through the track.

basically, where/how can i get hold of just the garage/two-step dubversions please? oh and i don't mean on vinyl. is there a good webiste for this kind of search does anyone know? :)

Reflex have put on a few all-nighters in the .zero bit of Plug - completely separate from the generic housey shite that gets played most fridays/saturdays . . .

so is iskhur a twat then sam? :D

this is driving me mental.

i think my problem is, the vocal versions were the only ones produced on these various 'garage anthem' type cds that keep coming up in my searches....

bollocks.

when it comes to dance music - vocal versions (often) do my nut in.

i want the instrumental versions.

anyone help me? :)

The CD box sets below have a few, but tbh without the vinyl, or...er... illegal ways of obtaining tunes which I won't mention lol, it's not going to be easy.
And to be even more honest, these aren't exactly the best compilations in the world, but still worth having. Fortunately you can still find them cheaply (they were selling them for £4 each in a shop in my ends not so long ago).

But however many compilations you buy, you'll never find all the oldskool dubs I've got on white lol

a UKG DJ from back in the day who never really had a particularly high profile; also did a remix of "Spirit Of The Sun" which wasn't much good. I've got a few of her sets somewhere tho. she's ok but she's hardly Donna Dee.
