Does anyone get wrestling?

I hate the "new" style of wrestling.I used to go to the City Hall in Newcastle with my late stepfather and watch the old uns.Big Daddy,Pat Roach,Strong man Dennison,Kendo Nagasaki etc.It was all good fun and they'd all come out afterwards and spend ages in the crowd made up of mainly old women. And me and my stepfather :)

I've got a signed photo of Big Daddy that I bought at one of these wrestling nights about 20 years ago. It depicts him cradling a piglet called 'Orson The Wonder Pig'. :D

"-Easy!... Easy!... Easy!... Easy!..."

wasnt the easy easy thing kendo nagasaki?????

old british wrestling sucks balls though! other then dynamite kid and posisbly the odd hart affiliated wrestler if they made it over here.

Be it the classic old British ITV/World Of Sport that I watched as a kid, or the ridiculous US WWF/WCW, etc... -it's all pure pantomime. The only people taking it seriously are the kids and the crazy grans in the front row. :D

yay! to pantomines!

I got into wrestling when summerslam came to england with the bret hart vs bulldog match and then watched a bit of wcw. Never had anytime for the world of sport shoot fighting stuff.

A good wrestling match will tell a story, get the viewer emotionally involved and put on a dazzling display of athletic moves. A match full of high spots can feature some true 'holy shit, I can't believe that dude didn't just die' moments and the skill involved to sell those moments to the crowd can't be denied.

To the casual viewer who's only seen Hulk Hogan (he was past it in the 80s), Undertaker etc then yes it can look like a bit of a joke. But if you've sat right up close at an indy match, watching real talent like Samoa Joe giving and taking some proper hard hits then it's a different story.

My favourite stuff was ten years ago in ECW. Rob Van Dam, Sabu etc. These guys really did put everything on the line just to give the fans something to remember. Broken jaws, backs, necks... it was all 'appening.

The last time I watched WWE was a couple of years ago, it's not really my thing. In fact it's the worst possible example of wrestling I can think of - complete pantomime, silly gimmicks, terrible booking making everyone involved (even the fans) look stupid.

yeah i cant really be arsed with wwe anymore.

Only really watch it for cm punk, john morrison, jericho and a few others really.

Tna and roh have some very good workers though.

I can't wait to see what samoa joe and angle put on in a couple of weeks.

I really wanna know where big show goes from this. He got beat by a 5"8 150 pound midget. Even with the knucks(and without seeing the match yet) I don't see how he can look anything but ridiculously weak off of this.

I finally turned my back on WWE for good when they bought the rights to ECW, then turned what used to be a genuinely cutting-edge hardcore wrestling promotion it into a traning camp for the very worst kind of gimmicky buffoons you could imagine. Last thing I heard, Vince McMahon was the ECW champ, for fuck's sake.

As for Big Show's credibility, they tore that to shreds years ago. Another example of WWE having no clue when it comes to booking; they're happy to have him roll around in sewerage to make six-year-olds laugh one week, then the following week he's booked as an unstoppable monster and we're supposed to be scared of him. Bunch of fucking twats, the lot of 'em.

Who would you put in the ring with to give him a bit of a push again then.

Rey mysterio would be the obvious candidate but he wont be back anytime in the next few months.

Possibly great kahli will get pissed off at big slow calling himself the worlds biggest ATHLETE and they can have an oh so entertaining(you can hear the sarcasem yeah?) little feud but i really cant see what he is going to do from here.

edit: while ecw really has nothing to do with ecw(other then styles commentating) it actully has some decent people on it. CM punk is brillient, john morrison really needs to be in TNA but some of the stuff he does is truely phenominal, ellijah burke & kofi kingston both look like they might do very well for themselves and shelton benjamin is actully starting to look like he may do something in wwe. I reckon i enjoy watching ecw more then either of the two flagship shows!

Colleague of mine, who's old enough to know better believes all that WWF (or whatever it's called) is for real and not the pantomime it actually is...

Don't like watching mma. Not spectaular enough for my tastes.

Heard he had one fight and didn't do too badly but made a rookie error and got got demolished.

Lesner always thinks he can do real sports(like his oh so brief yankee football stint), he can't he should get back on the pro wrestling.

Big Show would be best used in an enforcer role, a bodyguard to a wimpy heel or something, his ringwork is lousy but he can look formiddable in short bursts and you can't deny the presence of somebody that huge.

Don't tell me Khali is still on the WWE roster? I thought that big fucking joke had worn thin long ago.

CM Punk's always been class. It's a real shame they've turned ECW into what it is, otherwise he'd be a great fighting champ to give the brand some credibility.

I have to watch WWE for work. At first I totally didn't get it, but the more I watched, the more I appreciated it for the hilarious pantomime and hard work it is. They really do work hard, and while I don't really care much about the wrestling moves and so on, the storylines are addictively bizarre. There's classic villains and good guys, tasteless stereotypes, flabby manboobs, terrible acting and pneumatic shrieking women. It's entertainment!

What do you do for work? Sounds like a laugh!

I used to be a proper 'mark' back in the late 90s. I could even tell you the dates of birth and every purported wrestling weights of all of the WWFs roster and most of WCWs. Then Owen Hart (my favourite wrestler at the time) died and I kinda lost interest shortly afterwards.

I knew it was pre-determined but the pantomime aspect would keep me enthralled and the theatrical athleticism of the performers can be top notch at best.

A year or so back I went through a phase of 'Ultraviolent' wrestling where the weapons and blood were very real and it was only the outcomes which were fake. Here's a taster of what I'm on about

***only watch with strong stomach***

***only watch with strong stomach***

The dude featured in this video ended up being incarcerated for crack-habit-induced-burglary and is no longer active. Also, he bears an uncanny resemblence to yours truly just in case you wanted to know wnat I look like.

Never realised that, i thought he was still working for CZW.

i remember him! seem to remember him and chris hero doing some danm fine work in czw before hero went onto better things in roh.

The backyard stuff really doesnt intrest me at all. Far far far to unsafe for me to find entertaining.
