I have had a hand in making a couple of tunes recently (techno mainly), and from the beginning of that process I found myself getting drawn to different kinds of music. For example 5 years ago I would have never looked at Kings of Leons twice, and that is why I missed out ont heir early stuff, then I heard Only By The Night, and I started listening to it from a production angle and thinking, how do they make that sound, sound like that.

Its really good, ever since starting to make tunes, I have started listening to stuff from ages ago and hearing it for its production merit. It's like listening to things all over again.

I would like to get into punk, but I don't think that is going to happen.

I wish i could like the crap my daughter insists on playing when she is in my car, purely so the journeys would go quicker. If i play my own music she just puts her MP3 player on and opts out of conversations.

I wish I could like *some* of them, because when you reel off a list of pet hates in music like that, people start to look at you funny.

Them: "So basically you hate black music"

Me: "Well, okay, yeah, it happens to be mostly made by black musicians, but obviously that's not why I hate it"

Them: "Are you sure about that? Sounds like you're racist to me."

Me: "No, really, I'm not. I just...don't like r'n'b, soul, jazz or hiphop, okay? Oh, and gospel sucks too. And I'm not much into reggae. But I also hate heavy metal and nu-metal and saccharine pop music. The point is, I'm into guitar music, unless it's really stupid. So shoot me."

Them: "You're very *white* aren't you?"

Me: [sighs] I like some world music too. Does that help? No?

In some ways I wish I liked James Blunt/Coldplay/other wanky whiney "heartfelt" indie ballad fucktops, just so I didn't have to evacuate from anywhere that begins to play it.

I can only really get down to reggae, ska and punk, and maybe some hardcore. Oh and drum n bass, but only good stuff.

I wish I could really like other kinds of music. There's a lot of other music that I like, as in I really like the sound of it, but I don't really feel it if you know what I mean. But I wish I did, so that when I go to a club and hear it, I would be able to get down to it, instead of just stand there like a muppet, nodding my head.

Then there's music that I think is good, but I don't like the sound of.

I wish I liked Chinese music. There's enough of it out there to keep a billion people happy.
