shippy as your the anime fan, what are the films with briarius as the main character (crime fighting one iirc, the wear mech suits and stuff...... I watched it whilst tripping my tits off and loved it).

Yeah, love the more grown up stuff - though loved it all when I was younger. Saw Akira at the Ritzy once which is the only time I've seen anime on the big screen. Ghost in the shell is one of my favourites. I saw a series I enjoyed a few years with a group of 3 people who wander around getting into trouble (a girl and 2 lads) but I can't remember what it is...

I'm a great big fan of all of Hayao Miyazaki's stuff (my daughter loves Totoro).

akira isn't that fantastic

Akira is balls. So is ghost in the shell. If I hadn't picked up some cheap copies of the Urusei Yatsura manga in a second hand shop I would have never even thought about watching any anime ever again after Akira.

Mind you even the 'wacky' stuff can get a bit samey. After you have 218 episodes of UY you have seen them all.

(unless you count the OVAs and Films).

I really liked Akira mostly from a visual aesthetic and the score is great, but can see how it would be a bit diminished from the original manga in terms of plot, which I'm planning on reading, I certainly didn't pick up on all the themes.

Could some one explain this theme to me, I assume its to do with historical themes and imagery from the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but expect I'm of the mark possibly

Appleseed, which I'd sum up as awesome animation, awesome sound, shite story. The sequel, Appleseed Ex Machina, is even more beautiful in some sections, and even more impenetrable.

Annoying high pitched voices, cringeworthy fake laughter after every sentence, cutesy faces that express no emotion beyond Pokemon cards, shite 80's rock soundtracks, sadistic Japanese torture methods both in battles and especially in sex, a sense of bewilderment regarding life which is understandable but combined with the tweenie Technicolour moralisation for the masses, dubious child-rape storylines or depictions of young women being brutalised, all drawn of course by frustrated lonely young men, and featuring giant phallic monsters just in case one wishes to externalise the blatantly mysogynistic rape fantasies, what's not to like?

Anime. Because you read in the Sunday Times it's supposed to be an art form.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Like all media, there are good and bad examples.

Now from what I have seen, the bad does indeed outweigh the good, but that applies to music, movies, books and classical "art" as far as I am concerned.

For every 20 throw-away films or crappy series that embody one or all of the criticisms you have highlighted above, there are one or two genuinely special, moving, unique, funny and entertaining examples.

Bear in mind also that many of the tropes you highlight as negative, offensive or just plain stupid are native to a very different culture to ours - clearly non-Japanese audiences may well find it difficult to identify with or appreciate certain aspects, if not all of it.

Personally I have no time at all for Indian music or Bollywood movies or indeed Arabic entertainment in any form I have seen it in, but I would be foolish indeed to dismiss it all as somehow unworthy, offensive or of quantifiably less value that the art that I do appreciate, given that I either don't understand or can't/won't identify with it.

Don't like it? Fine!

To dismiss the entire body of work in a lazy generalisation of certain (hysterically over-publicised) aspects present in some examples of the genre is a bit daft.

Mind you, TBF Shippy doesn't always help the case...though in his defence he does tend to parody and play up his obsession in a manner to which critics like yourself seem to expect and often react to...

:)

There are a few noted exceptions, I've seen some of them.

But on the whole... meh.

An opinion I can respect far more than your other postrant...

What do you think about animation of non-Japanese origin? Is it specifically the Japanese tropes and conventions that put you off, or the medium in general?

i tried a while back to give full explanations and the like but i never got anywhere so i gave up

i was just interested in talking to the people who have actually watched the stuff not the people who feel the need to spout bile when i fell like talking about it

great post brains

You want nice, you either agree with me or present your case to counter-argue, you know how this shit works by now.

You give a crap reply like that to what was a pretty well constructed rant, and I'll just assume you're pished again and won't remember anyway.

Best post on this thread :D

to what was a pretty well constructed rant,

not really

even non anime fans would recognise that to be a somewhat reactionary remark

it certainly doesn't allow for the understanding that anime covers a broad spectrum

instead it distils everything down into a something that resembles beyblades mixed with hardcore porn

it didn't deserve anything but a sarky remark

it's like saying all hiphop is just black dudes shouting about how big their guns are etc

Yes and no. For example, Akira is a masterpiece but for every Akira there is 4 films or shows that I just don't "get". I'm watching Death Note right now and the plot and character development is so brilliantly executed. It's like an anime version of 24.
