I couldn't give a shit about owning a cd but I like to hold a book. I don't like reading long tracts on a computer screen.

^^ same with me - I love reading books and carry a book everywhere I go - just wouldn't be the same with an electronic reader thingy or doing it online.

Hardcopy books are wonderful things.

You would have to be really careless to destroy a book. They never run out of battery power. And when was the last time you heard of someone being mugged for a paperback?

Electronics always fuck up. It's rare to get any gadget these days that doesn't disappoint in some way.

Unless you just drop it in the bath.

I felt massively sceptical. But I am less so after having seen one.

All I say is go and see one for yourself. It wouldn't replace books. But I can imagine using one.

:)

I'm still pretty sceptical. I went into Cardiff the other day just to see the Sony reader. I've been looking at different ones on line for ages and trying to justify the high price of the Sony. I wasn't that impressed tbh. It wasn't that much better than reading text on an NDS.

This is a good thing, IMO! My books take up far too much space and clutter the flat up. Would love to dump most of them and just keep the fancy hardbacks.

I wouldn't. I'm rather proud of my overflowing bookshelves. :D I agree with the old saying that books furnish a room, which e-books won't. And anyway, much as these new readers might be easier on the eye than a computer screen, I can't see them being as easy or as nice to read as the printed page. I can see how they could be very useful, but I don't think people will give up hard copy that easily.

90% of the medai that we access on a regular basis is on the PC/online but never never books!

Books totally FTW!!

I still dream of having a library. Even if its just a big cupboard with a book shelf on each wall, ceiling light and room for one chair. :)

Me too. When I finally get settled and buy a house (i.e. not for a long time yet!) I want a nice, old-fashioned study lined with books.

I could see myself using an ebook alongside actual books..

I tend to take a book away for every day of my holiday, so actually using an ebook whilst on holiday appeals.

But I like possessing books (well, they possess me) so I can't see myself ever switching over totally.

May go into W'stones later and have a look.

That

The nature of reading is changing, and there will be an obvious move towards digital sources.

But I think it will be a long time, if ever, before real books are replaced.

I love books as well. My dream is to have a big old study lined with books. Even on shelves over the door. It is one of the reasons why I am going to be a Librarian.

I just see the e-reader thing as the potential to be able to read even more things than before. That can't be a bad thing.
