The dress is only thin cotton type stuff, that purple one wouldn't really be any different to bra and knickers

Is it loose/floatyish cotton? Might be worth it for that, a bit of streamlining. If it's closer fitting thin cotton it's just gonna emphasise the lumps and bumps emerging from either end of the lycra hold it in thing.

Technology/fabric has probably moved on from when I last wore one of those squeeze it in things tbh. Back then I just found it displaced, so my spare inches just emerged elsewhere

Definitely. None of that's an issue up top. But the longer the body length the better imo. Else it'll curl/ride up (as was the concern) or it'll stay put but with that 'here's where I end up' line.

It's like a dress, it stops at mid thigh. And I haven't tried both of them on together because it's mail order
Actually, I've only ever worn the dress with trousers, so maybe it's too short anyway

Yeah, I noted the size 10 glamour model shot
(As did you).But look at the shape of it - that purple one. It finishes at the flare out part, the bum bit (hence built in gusset). The detachable suspenders ... suspenders on a normal suspender belt don't reach down mid-thigh. The thing's designed to finish just covering your arse if you're lucky. The suspenders and stockings would keep it from riding up.
