Do you support your national football team?

I can't vote on the poll because it is too black and white between support and don't support . I fit somewhere in between and there is no way I'm voting for the comedy option !

Is this the thread that tries to make us feel ashamed for being English ?

come on drew, you know me better than that.

Club over country for me mostly... Grown a bit apathetic to all this corporate Premier League/International big-money football.

That's nearer to why I asked.

I find the whole England thing quite annoying. I don't like what happens to the country during a big tournament, I don't like people who watch football every two years telling me about the diamond formation and how SWP is "mustard" and I can't bring myself to support players like "Lamps", England's Brave John Terry, Ashley Cole and "Stevie G".

I went to the Belorus game and halfway through I found myself wanting them to score.

So... I wanted to check whether it was just me who feels like this or whether it's a widespread thing... and whether it is just something to do with the current England team, or if other countries have the same thing....

Not far from me are the leafy suburbs and when there is a big football tournament - and England win a game - people come out onto the roads and the passing cars toot and it's all quite exciting. Except for the flags, at least for me.

You can't just enjoy such things in this country, before long everything from 'two world wars and one world cup', to immigration and the rest is invoked. I find it all desperately parochial, cringingly embarrassing and just a shame.

That way lies the madness of 'Land of Hope and Glory' in Trafalgar Sq. with tens of thousands waving little flags like they've seen on Pathe News of VE Day.

I just enjoy the football and keep my head down.

I'm English and I want to support England but they don't interest me in the slightest and twunts like Ashley Cole, Rooney, Terry, Gerrard and Ferdinand actually make me hate the team somewhat.

I'm an Arsenal fan so I prefer to "support" any team with Arsenal players in it instead.

excuse me, sir, but Ferdinand is not a 'twunt'.

He's one of the finest gentlemen ever to grace the sporting arena, after Lennox Lewis.

the rest of them, OK, good players, but twunts.

Rio is a fucking don.

My choice.:) Never felt any real love for arsenal back when i got into the sport.

Where exactly are you from?

I got into football relatively late in life, as my parents were yoghurt knitting socialists who said that football was the opiunm of the masses, and we didn't have a telly, so I had no chance to get into it.. I finally discovered it for myself when living in Paris 97-98, the time when paris was hosting the world cup was the outstanding couple of months of my time there, the whole place seemed to pick up in mood etc, and I realised that there was more to football than aggro chav wankers (which is what I had thought it was all about), and then I thought long and hard... I had a choice of Orient, West Ham, arsenal or Spurs, being from hackney, tbh West ham are probably less of a Hackney team than the other three, but I could tell straight away spurs were wankers, Orient seemed tooo perpetually shit, arsenal seemed too boring (in terms of supporters). So it just had to be West Ham. I read abou theri long history of nearly getting there and thought, well that's the team for me, and it's near enough for people to accept that they're my team without accusing me of being some kind of inglory hunter, hungry for insuccess when I could have been following some local team like arsenal

Harringey, arsenal's stadium aint that far away from here. I started supporting my team cause i felt they were the underdogs but played the football at the time i enjoyed to watch.

Thing is most West Ham fans are known for being not exactly PC or unpatriotic, so I can only subscribe this thing to being more to do with antipathy with the current lot: Lampard's sketchy time at the club, Terry's time as a youth trainee wh o abandoned us for Chelsea, Gerrard's wanky 94th minute goal in the FA Cup (and as soon as he scored that I knew he was going to miss a World Cup penalty, just to rub it in).

But you have to think of a time in the future... I mean I know you support England at rugby and cricket, so your antipathy towards supporting england can't be some socialist 'anti national' bullshit, it's more to do with the playing staff.

Imagine if a team, comprising an Evergreen Robert Green, a composed and superb Tomkins, backed up by a back-at-the-club Rio, with Noble dictating play in midfield, feeding through superb balls to Hines and Stanislas, backed up by a few ne'er do wells from other clubs, win the wolrd cup in 2014, and these players are all still at West Ham, are you seriously saying you won't be wanking as you walk down the street?

and then i woke up

France then, gutted mate

I had this idea of Haringey as being near finsbury park and therefore islington, and tottenham in a totally different direction :D

I think of it all in terms of the numbers 30 and 253 buses...

Finsbury Park stradles Islington, Harringay and Hackney, ITS A SHIT HOLE and in true fashion is an ARSEnal area
