Do you recline your seat on aeroplanes?

I agree with all the anti-recline comments posted so far, and delighted to see that I am not the only one who has this as one of my Room 101 contenders. Don't really get much benefit from it but if for some reason I'm absolutely desperate my tactic now is to wait until the guy behind reclines. I will wait all frigging flight if necessary, even if some selfish twat in front has his seat in my chest, and if the guy behind doesn't recline, neither will I. If they do, they deserve what's coming to them. Hmph.

If it's a long flight and I need to sleep, then I'll give the person behind some notice and recline. Amazed it's such an issue, to be honest. (and don't give me the shit about legroom - I'm 6'2") People reclining seats is a part of air travel - not always pleasant/convenient, but not the hideous teeth-grinding faux pas many on this thread seem to think either.

I agree it's mildly irritating but at 6'1" I too have experienced the mild discomfort of a seat pushed back into my knees but it's really not that bad . What does piss me off is when they shove a bag under their seat and then recline the chair because it means I can't stretch my feet out underneath them !

I have a friend who has extremely long legs. He's 6'6". He is actually in agony when people recline their seat. 11 hours with your legs crushed isn't very pleasant.

As I'm 5'4" it doesn't bother me personally.

I've had this from the other direction, and I hadn't even reclined my seat. Some absolute wanker on a flight home to Dublin, the cunt kept kicking the back of my seat so we ended up having words

His justification for this was "my legs are too long" it's not my fault i keep kicking your seat. Problem was, he didn't appreciate it wasn't my problem either. The bastard wouldn't move to the free seat beside him that had nobody sitting in front of it either :(

I ended up moving seats myself as I was livid, about to lose my rag and smack him one. A plane cabin is certainly not the place for that :(

to be honest i recline my seat a little bit, but not the full whack. i rarely frly and i when i have done., having the seat in front pushed into my face hasn't been fun. so i like to give the person behind a fair chance at comfort. if the person n front reclines all the way i have to as well though.

Well that's obviously different. I'm on the cusp of what's bearable myself, so I feel for your mate & would clearly make an exception for really tall people. But generally... nah.

All the way back the minute the seat belt sign goes off, If the person behind me wants to make up the space they have the option of reclining too. :p

People doing this drive me feckin mad

I'm 6'3", its bad enough squeezing into the cramped conditions as it is, and then some fuckwit in front rams their seat back onto my knees, ensuring DVT kicks in cos i can't move, other than to try and push repeatedly on the back of their seat and hope they take the hint. Argh!!!

You weren't sitting behind on the way to Bogota last month were you? Some big lanky bloke was, and I could feel his knees digging into my back as I reclined my seat. But I had no choice, as the person in front of me had reclined theirs. Anyway, he started kneeing me in the back in protest, so I started bouncing back in my seat so as to smash him in the knees. It got quite heated and the stewardess had to intervene.

Bloody Ryan air don't have reclining seats now. I used to use it as a way of catching up on rest before a wild weekend away ;) There is plenty of room and people should stop whinging and all lean back..that way there is no problem..unless you are on bloody Ryan air of course  ;)

well presumably you are quite short; I would consider the non-reclining seats the sole good feature of the ryanair service; it is simply inconsiderate to recline your seat during a daytime, shorthall flight, because it is basically saying to the person behind 'I need extra space more than you need the precious little you have already'. Obviously the situation is different on long flights at times when it could reasonably be assumed that most want to sleep.

i recline my seat if i feel i need to. I care nothing for the person behind me.

when people do this, I ammuse myself by kicking the back of their seat while pretending to be asleep.

I always ask, and most people say: 'Aw, thanks for asking me...'

Which just goes to show.

This is even worse than just doing it without asking; how many people would feel able to say no? at least the blatent rudeness of people who just recline as if you're not there produces enough righteous anger to enable an honest response.

I recline my seat just as soon as person in front of me does, might as well give in to the domino effect rather than sit there cramped and fuming!

Anyone started kicking the back of my seat, some unexpected and extremely localised mid-air turbulence might accidentally propel a series of ever-heavier missiles in their direction...

and the source of the turbulance would be hastily deposited on the nearest island/tract of peat bog :D

i used to dont anymore after a flight to vegas where the old cow behind me hit me on the head with a rolled up newspaper!!

Christ  That is so out of order!
They should think themselves lucky you didn't punch their lights out ;)

I had to travel by coach for the last couple of days and we had a super dooper type of coach complete with reclining seats. Unfortunately my own seat did not stay upright but remained reclined all of the time no matter what I did to try and rectify it. :o

It was very embarrassing travelling around in the prone position and I am sure I have strained my back trying to sit up straight on such a seat...maybe this is devine justice for my self reclining habits on planes. :o

it was out of order, i had no warning that she was unhappy, she literally just hung over my seat and started bashing me.........and to be honest, the only reason i didnt react is because it was so surreal i was in too much shock to even ask what her problem was!
