My late father actually drove those "detector" vans. There was no detecting devices in them.

I first thought the bloke who came a knocking was a meter reader.
First off, as I did, ask who the person is?
Think carefully before you answer any questions and don't elaborate.
Don't let them in your home. They have no right to enter.
And the obvious one. Never, ever, admit you have a TV in use no matter what ruse is used to get you to state this.

I'm almost at the point of not needing one - time to cancel the TV part of my Virgin package and put my dodgy old TV out for recycling.

I pay but am tempted not to. I don't like the aggressive "your going to jail" type letters you get when you forget to renew. Also with the "we have special machines that tell us if your watching TV" Do you fuck!! - To me that basically says, "There's fuck all we can do so we're going to be as threatening as possible"

Those letters are as dodgy as fuck. They're often made to look like a court summons or some kind of official legal thing when in reality they're nothing of the sort. I dunno if it's the BBC or the government who is responsible for handing out the TV licensing contract to Capita or whatever shower of carpetbaggers it is this week, but whoever it is they should be ashamed.

It all evens out,I've just got a licence for the first time in 35 years because Virgin offered hundreds of channels (nearly all of which are shit) for next to nothing on top of my broadband.I did have a visit a few months ago from a licence guy who seemed a very nice man,I said "no TV" he said "fine just let me tick that off and you won't hear anything for at least six months".

I am also not a fan of those bullying threatening letters.

The BBC could do much better from a pamphlet about how the BBC is funded by us, how it's invested across TV, Radio and Online and why that makes it and Britain a world leader in cultural exports.

But no, it's threatening words about being 'under investigation' and 'criminal records' and courts and all that shit. GTF.

Im wondering whether to ditch virginmedia (and going totally tv free) at the moment..... most of the stuff I watch is download anyway......

The only thing I'd miss is the discovery channel...... i love it.
