Anyone listen to Mark Steele's new show at 6.30? Was pretty good... A few bits where he lost steam and iirc he fudged the ending a bit, but enjoyed it overall.

Yeah, not bad.

Comedy good on R4. Some of the other stuff's OK - Simon Schama's baseball programmes were pretty good just now.

It's either that or the World Service... ;-)

I tried to listen, really listen once. It was some white middle class commentator trying to describe what Richard Prior was about. Explaining it for the middle class.

It was embarrassing to listen to.
It's far more embarrassing for the person who can't get Richard Pryor's name right.

we're going up for a charity event in May

Take some pics...

I like R4 a lot personally... Factual stuff is good and some of the comedy (although don't get me started on count Arthur Strong), current affairs stuff often works well too. And they get some of the most ridiculously good interviews for some progs.

I've recently started listening to it and I love it. I don't have any favourite programmes because I generally just turn it on and see what's on but there's generally something good on.

I heard a really interesting piece about that young controversial playwright who committed suicide. Fuck, what is her name?

Anyway.

I find it quite soothing.

I like the comedy best of all. Just flicked onto it now and Scroobius Pip was on it. Wicked.

It's a staple of being British I think. The national anthem, the shipping forecast, desert island discs etc etc. Although I can't stand the Archers, never listen to it.

I probably give just as much time to Radio 1, Radio 2, Kiss 100, LBC, and XFM though. I couldn't listen to one station all the time.

I listen to Radio 4 and BBC 6 mostly now.

Used to be a big Radio2 fan and still listen to the J Vine sometimes but Steve Wright makes me want to puke.

It's mostly horrible, and agenda-following.

That said, it lets the likes of Melvin Bragg and Laurie Taylor make programmes the way they want them. It commissions series from Mark Steel. And, of course, it was home to I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue.

But the talky stuff on Radio 3 is generally better.

Thanks for reminding me of this. I'll have to listen to it on Iplayer later.

vine progs can be good, but wright and his sycophantic posse of nobends never fails to fail

Ugh I know. I'ts like Radio 1 for old people. I do not want kerazy 'factoids' or some nameless 'old woman' being wheeled out for my amusement.

I think the Jeremy Vine show benefits from Vine himself, he's quite good at subtly playing devils advocate but also being on the fence.

I have an insanely clued up reader mate who demolishes factoids just for the fun of it. A bit sad, but vastly entertaining to hear him calmly tearing Wrighties research team a new one.

Don't like Melvin Bragg.
Methinks he is a pompous oaf!
Could be wrong though!!
He does a good job on In Our Time, I think, guiding the experts through the subject and asking questions on behalf of the intelligent listener.

I don't care if he's pompous. There's precious little programming made, even on Radio 4, that isn't driven by the idiotic agenda of pr companies, so I treasure it where I find it. Start the Week is often good, too. From Our Own Correspondent is consistently excellent. Given the chance, people can do good things.

Ha they are blatantly bollocks.

'Did you know inuits have over a 100 words for snow?'

FFS that got smashed ages ago you plebs.

Radio 4. Last bastion of intellectual programming in a country otherwise saturated with commercial shit. Where else could you hear a 1 hour analysis of The Wasteland?

It can irritate me a little when he tries to steer the panel too much, but overall I think it's a great way of getting a little glimpse of complex topics.

Do I listen to Radio 4? If there's something I like on it, and I notice it in the listings. It's an occasional combination.
