wow, I've never heard anyone say that kind of comment before...
 
Jazz is such a small world to describe a wide range of musical styles, and just like any other musical genre you have to listen to as much of it as possible, find a style or artist that in some way 'clicks' for you, and then start to explore further from there.

Normally the simplest recommendation would be to start with Miles Davis and work from there ('Kind Of Blue','Sketches Of Spain') and move to Coltrane ('A Love Supreme') and then maybe try some Herbie Hancock - which can start with his work with Davis and then progress to his fusion work with the HeadHunters. Someone mentioned Wynton Marsalis - give his stuff a listen but also try listening to his brother Branford.

I'll dig some stuff out and post it up on here later for you to have a listen to.
