Do You Like Jazz?

There's so many different styles out there that its hard to answer yes or know.

Some of it I think is inspired, while a lot of it is complete rubbish.

I don't really know where to begin with a lot of it too, but one thing I know I like (and maybe someone out there can help me out here) .. is that 1960s stuff by John Coltrane. Sleighbells and harps all over it... very mellow :)

What style would that be, and what releases contain those tracks? I do have some other JC stuff but it's earlier mad squiggly sax stuff that I'm not so keen on and hardly ever play.

ooh, hark at her. getting a bit overexcited because somebody dared to challenge your rather absolutist opinions.

thing is, monkey boy, you're moving the goalposts on your original claim AND putting words into my mouth. and don't presume to tell me what i do or don't know, it makes you look like a cunt.

I'm new here, but I can see why you haven't been made a mod yet

Picking out AWB as the benchmark for Jazz Funk is like picking out Akey Breaky Heart as the benchmark for country.

Jazz funk: Rasputin Stash, Cymande, Hal Singer, Rusty Bryant, The Blackbyrds, Joe Thomas. And, yes, Curtis.

They were the only thing you mentioned. You picked the worst abomination you could think of and said "Is Curtis like these cunts?"

No, no he's isn't. But he's jazz funk, mate. Superfly is a jazz album.

i think that's stretching a point. plus, it's a soundtrack, isn't it, so it's bound to be a bit looser and jazzier than an album proper

I would have said funk.

It is a proper album.

Unless you think Can soundtracks aren't really Can music?

jesus :p

ok, it's still a proper album, but the nature of a soundtrack album is such that it is inevitably going to be more freeform or extemporised or mood-based than a straight album of songs. which is why it may well qualify as jazz.

So. Curtis did jazz?

At last!!!

Any other jazz you like?

fucking loads

and i NEVER SAID CURTIS DIDN'T DO JAZZ> i said he wasn't really a jazz funk artist. you obstinate whelp :D

But you're wrong. You Goth.

Space Is The Place, though. Any funk there? :p

oh come on, yes, Sun Ra was funky as fuck. was it jazz funk? no.

what you're doing is playing games with the dumb genres we apply to things, which i've already conceded is a folly. but you KNOW what people talk about when they talk about Jazz Funk, and they're NOT talking about Sun Ra
