Do you ever want to smack armericans who call 'soccer' boring?

It is indeed frustrating when North Americans sit back and call the world's most popular, loved, played and viewed sport boring then cite their own games as 'proper sport'. Please, there's a reason only North America plays baseball, football and basketball - because they're not actually very entertaining. I don't mind basketball as it matches football for action, but the skill level is far, far lower and the play is far less flowing and far less beautiful.

pass intereference is ridiculously hard to play & requires a lot of skill and anticipation or you end up fouling the reciever all the time.

sport being the least well sublimated aspect of the war urge. Funny how male the top viewed sports are. Course thats just cause men are bigger and better at pyhsical contents. That must be the reason. Nowt to do with war or gender. How silly of me.

You know what they did to the first high-division black player ( a Hammer irc)?

they threw banannas at him.

Don't try to pretend that sport doesn't provided a release for bigoted militarist types, even if they don't realise how their sacs are being milked YOU bloody well do.

christ you're the sort of 1980's pc retard one would have expected to meet in the SWP.

The elitism of your post is only surpassed by the one dimensionality of your analysis.

An artist in my eyes, is someone who can lighten up a dark room. I have never and will never find difference between the pass from Pele to Carlos Alberto in the final of the World Cup in 1970 and the poetry of the young Rimbaud, who stretches "cords from steeple to steeple and garlands from window to window." There is in each of these human manifestations an expression of beauty which touches us and gives us a feeling of eternity.

didnt even see that what a prick!

Sport has done more for race relations then most things. Its hard to hate an entire race when there are many playing for your club, same happened with american football and basketball.

Some experienced racism in the seventies?! My god! Well that clearly shows that, 30 years later, sport is pseudo-war for idiots and racists! The people must be told!

:D

You never liked PE much, did you, DC?

Is that why they fall down sobbing like babies, then get up five minutes later and are fine?

Grow a pair, british football!:D

Well, there's good reason for melodrama. It's not a nice side of the game, and everyone would much rather it wasn't there, but if you're playing in a game worth hundreds of millions and you can boost your teams chances by diving, then it's no surprise that some people choose to do so.

the left does seem to be filled with nerds and social misfits who have sublimated their hatred, sense of entitlement and general misanthropy into a confused politics.

Getting picked last does starange things to people.

Football's a good game. It's just the cheating, rich cunts that play it at the top level that really get on my tits.

No, it was just two years ago.

p.s. I just love a sport where the score often ends up zero-zero.

Incidentally, games in the World Cup tend not to be that high quality. It's a great event, because of the 'countries vs countries' factor, but it's undermined by the fact that a lot of the players just don't work as well together as they do for their normal club sides, so the teams aren't of as high a standard, and also that, with the games being such high stakes, they are often lower scoring than in the usual club scene.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Only about 1 in 10 NFL Superbowls are even worth watching. Its only one game and usually turns out to be a dud. Once in a great while you get a good one like the one three months ago where the odds-on favourite team ended up losing. :D

Nonsense. Basketball is huge in China.

Went to basketball in the US once. Now that was shit. It was literally end to end one basket after the other with the only excitement in the last 3 minutes as we waited to see who'd win from a position of 88-90 or something.

But baseball I do like. A fine game

I have to say that I like the way the NFL/the Superbowl is pretty equal and you get loads of different teams contesting it. Until this year's random FA Cup the FA cup had been between the same 4 teams constantly.

;)

I see basketball being played way way more than football. That said, the conditions in China simply suit basketball more. It can be played on any patch of stony ground as long as there's somewhere to put a net up. There aren't many decent grassy fields in Chinese cities, for the most part, so playing football isn't very convenient.

They love watching football, of course. But they'd rather watch the EPL at home than go out and watch their local leagues.

I would rank the world team sports in bigness as:

1. Football
2. Cricket
3. Basketball
4. Baseball
5. Rugby

Of course, if the NFL, canadian football, rugby union, rugby league, gaelic football and aussie rules were all done away with and merged into one universal code, a game could be developed which could quite easily challenge football as the world's major ball game. IMO.

the reality is that in the US basketball is becoming more popular and baseball less popular. This trend has been going on for the last 30 years or so.

Baseball is just plain boring, period.

If I had to choose, I would choose American football first, as it seems like a game which could be appreciable if you got into it, then basketball, as at least stuff happens (although my gripe with it is precisely the opposite one to that which Americans have with soccer: it's too high scoring!), and then baseball, which is severely tedious.

Most team games are pretty dull if you don't support one of the teams involved. I like football as I want my team to win. I don't watch baseball, basketball, rugby or cricket as I couldn't give a shit if they win, lose or get eaten by bears. Though the last option would be quite entertaining.

The only reason you support a team is because you like a sport, not the other way round.

I find American Football to be incredibly boring but I can understand how some can find it exciting.

What really annoys me is when Americans call football "soccer". Weirdos! You hardly ever use your foot in American football.

It's weirder that people can get so wound up by a word, IMO. And the term was supposedly invented by an Englishman - C Wreford-Brown of Corinthians

You're quite right, in that it is a British word. It's more the disdainful way that Americans tend to say it which can be irritating...
