We're not too badly off, from an English perspective at least, for things like that are we Minnie?

Alright, so we're not going to match the bustle of street traders in the Far East, but we've got street traders serving everything from pholourie, roti and black pudding, through to empanadas and crispy pork skin, through to Brazilian snacks that I can't remember the name of, saltfish fritters and prawn croquettes, also taking in Indian, middle eastern and more traditional english snacks (Greggs pasties) along the way.

Spring rolls and satay are easily and quickly available from the, erm, Satay Bar and other retailers to boot.

Short of the missed El Panzon there's nowt much glaring missing from the snack market, particularly in the day. It's more late night when the options become less impressive.

Yeah, but they're not all in one place so you can't sit and mix and try your friend's who might be having something totally different thereby giving you the chance to try something without having to spend too much money :D or bin it and then find somewhere else to eat

They're pretty much all within two roads though Minnie - how lazy do you need to be?
:D

Given that Far Eastern food courts are unlikely given out hygiene and streetscape preferences (boo) I don't Brixton's getting a bad deal with street snacks. To be honest, I'm a much bigger, more dedicated gannet than most and I still keep finding different snacks to try.

Because you might want Chinese, your friend might want Indian, your other friend might want a burger and someone else might want sushi. If there's four of you, what do you do, go visit four places, sit down four times whilst each of you eats and then go to the next place or get it all in one place and sit at the table together?

There's absolutely no reason why such a place couldn't meet the hygiene standards we would expect.

Yes there is - who's going to supply the infrastructure over here unless they're one of those property landlords who tend to favour the usual big brands.

I'm honestly struggling to think of a decent food court over here. Yep, I can eat a McDs, KFC and/or a noodle dish and baked potato in the same court of a West End or numerous provincial shopping centres, but as a whole they're rubbish.

I'd suggest getting more flexible friends myself.

;)

The indoor market off Brick Lane? Retro clothes at one end & food stalls at the other with shared tables, a bit like Spitalfields market used to be, quite cramped & busy but lots of interesting choices.

maybe not really a food court, but definitely somewhere a group of people can all try something different & then sit together.

I don't have the problem myself as I don't get out much these days :D

this used to be really good - not sure what it's like now since the redevelopment.

There were several different food van - indian, thai, indonesian, mexican, jacket potatos, crepes, polish and maybe some others I can't remember. A load of tables and chairs not tied to any particular eatery. A lot of the food was pretty good and cheap and all independent - no chains at all.

Apart from Giraffe iirc, and then what looked what happened to the place.
:(

Used to really like Bubba's bbq there, even if a fair bit of the food there was average at best. Festival style thai, bum standard texmex and the like

Where do you get crispy pork skin from? Drools

Crispy pork skin, or luxury pork scratching to us, is available from that Colombian snack bar/butchers/general store down Pope's road, next to the old Tesco/Kwik Save site (opposite the loos)

£1.20 for a generous portion of porky goodness, or wrongness, depending on your point of your view. Flaming lovely if you ask me.

Their generously filled empanadas are definitely worth a punt too. I keep meaning to try other things out from there, but I'm always distracted by the pork and empanadas....

Has anyone ever been to a good food court? Maybe it's different somewhere in the world, but the US and UK courts tend to basically be ersatz versions of 'ethnic' takeaways (Singapore Sam, Banditos etc) along the big brand names like McD's and all. Add to that they're usually in the basement or alternately unpopular level of a shopping centre, plastic tabled wonderlands lit up by harsh strip lighting.

I never been to a decent food court yet. You might be able to eat 16 types of food in one place, but it's all crap branded bland food ime.
Garden City Shopping Centre, Kampala, Uganda.
Bit of a trek from Brixton, I agree, but a cracking food court.

Mmmm day off tomorrow, might have to swing by.

Never been down Popes Road to notice that ... if the pork scratchings (or whatever they call them) are that nice I might have to undertake an expedition in that general direction one day too.

Been to decent ones in Singapore and Penang

I had a sushi hte other day in brixton - can't remember the name of the place. and it was TERRIBLE. it was WARM and had no taste what so ever.

so a sushi place would be nice.

Sounds like Fujiyama to me. Big open benches in a fairly subdued noodle bar environment, or bright green walls on a small restaurant?

Chicharrón. Very nice indeed. Much nicer than pork scratchings. I cook chicharrón myself and it's really delicious.

A 'proper' fish and chop shop would be great.
A pie and mash shop would be good too but I don't think Brixton quite has the history like Bermondsey and the east.

My first husband's step-mother remembers it from before the war. I ate there a few times myself. It was really old school. There was a sign in the window that said

"Don't stand outside being miserable, come inside and get fed up."

giraffe only appeared in spitafields after the revamp started. the food court was before that.

I wasn't saying it was the best food - but it was an example (4 years ago + ) of a something appriximating a food court - inependent food stalls, no chains (in the time and part i was referring to) where people could buy from different places and the seating was available to everyone irrespective of where they bought from.

for missing places in brixton:

central and south american in the evening. I love the empanadas - but it's only days and limited to brazilian and countries near by. In elephant and castle there are sometimes stalls selling latino street food in the middle of the night - eg. tacitos, empanadas. given the increasingly large latino population, a take away selling such food would be great.

Also, as far as i'm aware there are no east european restaurants or east mediterranian (eg albanian). i'd like both an eat in and take away of this eg. 1/4 bird (duck, chicken etd.) plus saur kraut and dumplings. also stuff like pierogi and other stuff. As far as i'm aware there is nothing in brixton serving any type of east european food.
