The racist thing is a lot stronger in the films, where most of the orks are dark skinned (this is never mentioned in the books iirc) and it is never explained that the humans who fight on Sauron's side have all been enslaved by his armies and are not fighting voluntarily. Perhaps the thing with the 'indians' made to fight for Sauron is more a dig at the British empire?

Although I loved the recent LoTR trilogy, I noticed the Easterners looked abit... Ottoman, as in Muslim.
