Do animals engage in foreplay as well as sex?

Watching Big Cat Live on the BBC there the lions were rolling around and looked like they were getting off with each other. It was so sweet!!.:) Which raises the question: do animals engage in foreplay as well as sexual intercourse? Which animals?

Do animals have oral sex and so on?

Its an intriguing question - i bet some animals do.

The short answer is "Yes!". The longer answer is that few other species are as hyper-sexual as humans, with the possible exception of bonobo chimpanzees.

"Biological Exuberance" is a good resource for otherwise undocumented aspects of animal sexuality, although it mainly deals with observations of homosexuality in wild animals.

so an unneutered dog?

Or that embarrassing masturbating budgie that just won't stop going at it....

:hmm:

Caged animals do weird things -- caged humans too.

Consider the hypertrophy of the genitalia in males, and of the mammary glands in females. Consider also the fact that humans are pretty much always sexually receptive.

It may not fit in with most humans' idea of what makes them special and different compared to other animals, but the fact of human hypersexuality is really rather well known (if something we generally prefer not to emphasise).

Well, a male cetacean may have to swim and serenade his intended for hundreds of miles, if he is to get a result!

whats a cetacean???

more details!

thanks Jonti :)
Cetacean is a broad term that covers all the whales, from porpoises and dolphins to blue whales. Brittanica has some information of cetacean sexuality.

The displays of synchronised swimming and acrobatics for which dolphins are famous are often employed by males to impress the female of the species. :D

part from humans, which animals are the most active with foreplay and what do they do?

amazing!! :)
That would be the bonobo. When discussing the bonobo's sexual practices, it is easier to say what they don't do!

Bonobos become sexually aroused remarkably easily, and they express this excitement in a variety of mounting positions and genital contacts. Although chimpanzees virtually never adopt face-to-face positions, bonobos do so in one out of three copulations in the wild. Furthermore, the frontal orientation of the bonobo vulva and clitoris strongly suggest that the female genitalia are adapted for this position.

Another similarity with humans is increased female sexual receptivity. The tumescent phase of the female's genitals, resulting in a pink swelling that signals willingness to mate, covers a much longer part of estrus in bonobos than in chimpanzees. Instead of a few days out of her cycle, the female bonobo is almost continuously sexually attractive and active.

Perhaps the bonobo's most typical sexual pattern, undocumented in any other primate, is genito-genital rubbing (or GG rubbing) between adult females. One female facing another clings with arms and legs to a partner that, standing on both hands and feet, lifts her off the ground. The two females then rub their genital swellings laterally together, emitting grins and squeals that probably reflect orgasmic experiences. (Laboratory experiments on stump- tailed macaques have demonstrated that women are not the only female primates capable of physiological orgasm.)

A friend mentioned this exhibition at the Museum of Sex in NY called "the Sex Lives of Animals"

http://www.museumofsex.com/exhibit/sex-lives-of-animals

"animals participate in an astonishing array of sexual behaviors, where all conceivable sex acts and sexual partnerships exist. Animals
engage in foreplay behaviors such as kissing, hugging, mutual and self-stimulation, oral sex and every kind of penetrative intercourse imaginable"

Elephants are one of the few animals besides humans that engage in 69 before intercourse, but they do it standing up, of course.

Maybe to a dog, humping your leg is a type of foreplay.

Surely they'd get snot stuck in their pubic hair!

Or don't elephants care about such things?

There is a damn good book about this called (something like) Biological Exhuberance. It has a picture of a cassowary on the front. Will try and remember more!

Isn't there a youtube video of a chimp sucking itself off?

Side-by-side, top to tail and hot trunk action

awesome thread. :D

Slug sex can take hours. They wrap around each other for quite a while before their bits come out like this.

I can see the purpose of foreplay in ensuring sex, when it finally comes, is as effective as possible. Courtship before that ensures the selection of the fittest.

We like to think that our behaviour isn't a consequence of our evolution, like that of other animals, but it is.
