DJs "Reading the Crowd" Load of pants!

However I found the punters to be appreciative of the effort made.. :)

So appreciative they deluged you with lots of nice healthy vegetables and eggs for you to make an omelette with. And some homeopathic bottles of piss to wash it all down with.

I read the title of the thread as 'Reading, the crowd, a load of pants!' Which made sense, but it hasn't happened yet has it? :D

it's good to experiment and try new stuff but you've got to seduce the crowd with a bit of foreplay before moving onto the heavy stuff

you gotta tease them, make them want more, make them beg

and only then when they're gaggin for it, unleash the serious basslines

to conclude, it's like making luuurve to a beautiful woman :p

And of course, when you step up to international dj'ing "reading the crowd" become's all the more complex. The same skillset you'd use, say, in a club in North London, ain't gonna be the same as in Italy.. You're working within a whole different frame of reference, cultural difference and expectation. But its the skill of the truely international dj to actually manipulate this to his/her advantage. Can't do it - shouldn't be on the decks. Simple as. :)

Of course, there's also the element of educating your crowd.. I like to spend the first 10 -15 minutes of sets doing so.. Certainly that's the way things worked in my last gig in Italy. By the end the floor was bangin' :)
Personally I dont go to clubs to hear my record collection. I like to be challenged when dancing.

:D at this thread

yeah read the crowd etc, but how much do u compromise
not my fault if they can't hack the ardcore junglism
no compromise  ok, maybe a little bit :p

You've got to have the crowd with you or what's the point....otherwise it's just wanking in public with your record collection.....and i'd rather not do that in public thanks very much :D

aren't we all forgetting that hollis only has one record, so which one he thinks is right for the mood of the crowd is an easy question even for him

Yeah well - maybe if your on £10k a night the scores different.. (I'm not.. )

So my humble observational opinion is that most dj's play what the fuck they like. Do I care? No I don't.. ? <very cool>

i do my best to 'read the crowd'.. that is, after all, the thing i like doing the best, making them dance... and if i get it right they dance,.. if they wander off i change the style slightly to see what they're going for... always for the crowd, never for self :)
