DJs "Reading the Crowd" Load of pants!

a DJ who doesn't bother taking notice of what the crowd are getting into and just sticks to his/her own likes will often find an empty dancefloor in front of them.

that reads like djs should pander to the crowd doens't it, and just play the floor fillers regardless of whether the dj likes them or not? that's not what i meant!!

everyone thinks i think that djs should be like fat jim from my school discos now. :(

"and now guys, grab yerselves a girl <cough cough hack> <spits out phlegm> it's the rection section...."

I agree a DJ should play what they want to play while keeping an eye on the crowd to see how they react.

If they don't like it or aren't dancing than play something different that you like until you've got the crowd with you.

That's what reading a crowd is all about IMHO. :p

I went to this smoke free R&B /Garage/ Hip Hop thing a while back and it was exactly like that

commercial sounding pop orientated stuff and every now and then the DJ would say "Curm on gerws, give da guys and chance, whassamada wiv ya?"

:(

There's nothing I hate more than standing there waiting to hear decent music while a DJ presides over an emptying dancefloor nodding his head in approval of his crap selection

This coming from a man who tried to persuade me to use his copy of Crazy Frog in my Offline set :D

yes that's exactly what i meant to say from the offset. obviously ;)

i think i might leave this thread now. i'm confusing myself on what should be a very simple subject.

in fact i think i should leave the boards.

goodbye :(

And Rudeboy didn't even play Crazy Frog in his own set. I think he was trying to sabotage my DJ career, frankly

Not at all. I was just reading the crowd and they weren't ready until you were playing.

I'm going to try that at Offline tonight. "Cam on lads, give this lovely lady a chance, she's only trying 'er best, innit!"

Of course, there's also the element of educating your crowd.. I like to spend the first 10 -15 minutes of sets doing so.. Certainly that's the way things worked in my last gig in Italy. By the end the floor was bangin' :)

This is the only thing that happens if you try to "educate" a crowd:

Its certainly a difficult one to pull off. Especially when you haven't played that particular £12k rig in that particular environment. However I found the punters to be appreciative of the effort made.. :)

That was for the cheap red wine you kept passing round, nothing to do with your DJ skills. :p
