DJing different tempos - advice

So, what are people's most diverse mixes?

I did "Raining Blood" into "Dancing Queen" once, worked a treat :D
Oh, I've done some shockers/inspirational mix/clangers and I do them on a regular basis. I've dropped country and western from D'n'B and other daft calls. If the crowd are in the right mood it can be a real fun moment. One thing I am not is a Veh Serious DJ here to 'educate' the crowd. I'm there for the laughs and the beer.

Headsup-

All of the following can be mixed with Dnb on vinyl. Wish I'd recorded them, I might try to digitally recreate.
I used to always use either Krust-Warhead or Bad Company- The Nine.

Missy Elliot- Get Ur Freak on
Ultravox- Vienna
Kraftwerk- Man Machine
Gary Claim On U Sound System- Rumours of War
Bananarama- It ain't what you do
It's a Knockout- Theme Tune

:D
It ain't what you do v Warhead - I can hear it!!

(i also use Warhead for dancehall accapellas - nice and long sparse track)

Just spend time listening to your music, know it, and love it. Learn to appreciate how you feel as you are listening, and then just see if you can translate that feeling through the technical medium of your choice.

What I don't like is a DJ who just sticks very tightly within a specific tempo frame - with little or no alteration. That is just laziness of the highest order - especially if they are using computer driven / mediated techniques.

:)

Carly Simon - Why and Helicopter Tune is one I remember doing years ago  :D

I used to go to People's Republic of Disco regularly. You must have been too. Everyone brings two tunes and the DJs make a good evening out of them. A bit of punk, a bit of ska and a bit of Dolly Parton and there's no beat matching, just people having a good time with random musics.

Once I saw Chris Tofu play a DJ set with a single old Dansette on a chair in the middle of the room and he would play the same sort of crazy selection, with half the tunes at the wrong speed and he wouldn't start looking in his bag for the next tune until the previous one had finished. Everyone in the room was in on the joke except one woman who muscled her way forward and tried to take over.....

I don't know what I'm saying except it's the responsibility of the DJ to fill the floor and make sure everyone has a good time and you can do that a million ways. One thing, though. You should never get so involved in your own science and knowledge that you let your own ego blind yourself to your entertainment responsibility..... Something like that.

Play each tune all the way through and forget about beat matching.

on some ridiculous high end, non technics decks, no mixer, Klipshorn Speakers, and not very loud ...... ( + with everyone on very good quality MDMA supposedly / or a 'natural one' )

+ balloons. + Cosmo.

finding the link / transition tracks between the mini sets is the key (obvs) - beatless intro's / outros on big tunes always v useful , + the easy 'non mix 'transition was always the quite swift fade on the playing record ( hopefully for last 4 of an 8 ) , and simply boshing the next one on top as the 8 finishes / out going tune is disappearing

ludacris' "whats your fantasy" beat matches jungle too.... as does the jungke book cartoon theme,... i reckin you can only do 1 (max) of these novelty cross genre beat matches per set tho, other wise its well cheesy.

Loving this!! I do a vinyl night every month with a few others and the chopping and changing can be extreme
A shitloads of tunes and a load of booze as someone said. Also rewind spin back and into something else or the switch deck off and let it slow down then bring in the next gem
When it works it works!!
Mashups are good cos it makes you look clever and you'll always have someone who never heard it.
Best one I ever did was dizzee rascal into some jungle seamlessly at a free party when everyone was fried next day and got some respect and astonishment from others! Total accidental fluke and never been able to recreate :D

What are you playing on?

On a controller the tempo reset button is helpful, especially if this a silent gap ;)
