Dj Grooverider, jailed for four years

We'd all like that but criminalising them with extra tough punishments for smoking a spliff is likely to have the reverse effect.

I believe that harsh punishments assiduously enforced would eliminate the majority of the demand for drugs, whether "soft" or "hard". Are you honestly saying that no-one would think twice about using cannabis if they knew that if caught with it they'd get four years?

Crime seeps into the cracks of society. Give these people an inch and they'll take a mile. The solution is not to have any cracks.

Nope, they would have to build a few more thousand prisons to handle the massive influx of newly prosecuted users and then cope with the inevitable mass-protests that would happen. Trust me, the law on weed is fucked as it is, the police have realised people are gonna do it whatever and that prosecution is more hassle than its worth.

You havent got a clue mate.

precisley. Untethered, you've not thought this through, have you. Surely it'd be better to spend the money used on keeping someone who is sick with addiction,on helping them get better. Reducing the number of people in prison. And helping them. At half the cost.

The laws in the country are arse about face. The 2 main legal drugs, kill hundreds of thousands of people EVERY YEAR world wideIllegal drugs are one hell of alot safer in comparrison. Instead of banging people up,it should be regulated. making people criminals for choosing to get a little high is wrong,so wrong the mind boggles. Especially when people so voicefully oppose drugs, over their scotch and dry, whilst puffing on a ciggy. people like that can't even see the hypocrasy.

Is anyone addicted to cannabis?

You're right. It is hypocritical. I'd ban alcohol and tobacco too.

What damage does a kid having a spliff do?

oooo come on, as much as I used to love the 'erb... some kids fall apart at the seams after a hefty skunk, its well documented.

As for the punishment - well, that's a matter for the kid's parents, not the nanny state fuckwits...

It would be just as futile and ultimately just as pointless. Or do you think having harsh penalties for murder somehow stops murder?

If people want drugs, they'll find a way of getting then, irrespective of what the law says or the penalties imposed.

You've changed your tune!

Psychologically addicted - yes, it happens. A lot.

All the more reason to clamp down on it then.

Either way, putting drug users in a place where they can't get drugs is likely to cure them of their addiction pretty quickly.

I'm aware, of course, that it's probably easier to get drugs inside prisons than it is outside. Prisons should be run properly, not in the anarchic fashion that most are today.

Anyone taking drugs into a country like Dubai is an idiot and have limited sympathy for.

Far more sympathy for the poor guy with the poppy seed or stood in microscopic speck of cannabis.

I would not want to visit a place that considers accidentally standing on something the same as importation!

If we had drug laws like that in this country perhaps people would take them - and the law - a bit more seriously. Our toleration on this issue is a serious weakness and our society is much the worse for it.

Mr "Grooverider" should have taken a little bit more time and trouble to make himself aware of local regulations and check his pockets before departure. Not doing so just shows his disrespect for the place he's visiting. From some of his statements, it doesn't sound like he's learned his lesson.

Huh?

the mans an idiot does'nt really desrve 4 years though.
the poor sod with o.o3 of a gramme that is taking the mick though :(

the poppy seed guy is even worse!

makes you wonder what would happen if they scanned my walletand found some long lost traces of chang..

place sounds disgusting anyway......not sure if I'm right here but does anyone think that being black maybe makes the authorities examine you closer in Dubai?

A friends brother lives there and it's all about who has the most maids apparently....

I hope their hotel subsides into the sea!:D

The DJ - real name Raymond Bingham - was arrested in November 2007 for flying in for a nightclub gig with 2.16g of cannabis in his luggage.
Bingham denied smuggling drugs, claiming he had left the cannabis in a trouser pocket and forgotten about it.

He won't forget in the future

Legalise all drugs. Prohibition is what leads to the youth on youth gun killings we are sadly becoming all too familiar with.
