I can't think of any modern musician (apart from The Travellin' Wilburys) who could pull off a modern sound of rock and roll/rockabilly yet connect it with the past. Knopfler and Dire Straits did so with "Walk Of Life". If you don't tap your feet to that then evidently you are dead.

:p

i really like private investigations, water of love, in the gallery and why worry?
money for nothing and walk of life are a bit played out but i still dig them.

Alltogether now

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

I always thought it was a poor man's version of A-ha's take on me

When they played Brothers In Arms in the west Wing I went a bit funny :o

I passed out to that song when I was a young teenager and woke up with some horrible boy trying to look up my skirt and undo my bra .

I do not understand this at all. In the 1980s, only wankers liked Dire Straits, Phil Collins etc.

What has happened?

people stopped ascribing a certain kind of music to a group of people they didn't like and went back and listened to the music

I can't fucking stand Phil Collins and never could, but I liked Dire Straits a bit. What's the wanker issue with Dire Straits anyways? Can't be that blokey couldn't play guitar cos he clearly could.

Private Investigations = one of the best no#1 singles evah

this thread makes me smile,
I got a hell of a lot of pisstaking back in 1997 for saying that Dire Straits had stood the test of time
while putting my 20p in the jukebox for Telegraph Road

whatever you do, DO NOT EVER go and see a tribute band called Dire Fakes!

my maths teacher used to be Dire Straits tour assistant in the early days before they hit the major big time,
I hate to burst your bubble but there were no tales of back stage debauchery

Sultans of the Swing makes washing up time reduce by 50% and that is fact. Indeed, it leaves you time to dance with the dog for the final bars

I once listened to a radio 5 interview with Knopfler,
they had a phone in and this vet from the first Gulf War rang in and told
how after a particularly long and brutal tank battle,
when all the dust had cleared the boys put a loud speaker out of one of the tanks and played
Brothers in Arms out loud into the desert and it brought a tear to the soldiers' eyes.
"I just wanted to share that with you Mark"
Mark was a little speechless, probably not quite what he had intended for his song....
