Dilemma: finish degree or take new job

my overriding feeling is that degrees are in the main useless. More or less any job you get with a degree you can also get without one. There is usually more than one route to the job market place if you're a bit creative with how you get there or make sacrifices in other areas.

Of course if you want to study just for the sake of it/for your own derivative pleasure then so be it. I was simply offering an alternative point of view...

I agree in general, but in strung out's case, having 2/3 of a degree and a lot of debt which is currently meaningless, it seems sensible to spend a little bit more time and money to complete his degree.

Your point would have been more relevant if he was saying "should I take this job in an industry I really want to work in, or should I begin a degree?".

I agree. 2/3 of a degree really is pretty much worthless and it represents a waste of the time put into it, whereas a whole degree is worth something.

That's not really true if you want to be a

Doctor
Nurse
Lawyer
Teacher
Engineer
Pharmacist
any other type of Scientist
Social worker

etc etc

Even other jobs that didn't need a degree but trainig to do are starting to need them.

The question is do you enjoy the subject you are doing or do you want to do something that requires a degree?

I would go back and finish the degree first. You've already completed 2 years of it and it would be a shame not to do the last year. You might regret later not finishing your degree...

ask yourself what additional benefit having a degree will give you once its completed. will you need it do a similar job to the one you've jsut been offered. the answer is probably not.

you say you're wanting to get out of retail. a degree isnt necessary for htis to happen unless you want to do something degree specific i.e. doctor, law, surveyor etc.

if you're looking at some form of graduate scheme then of course you will need a degree. if not then think about what you would like your career path look like. as cheg says a degree isnt always necessary but it can prevent you ahving to do further study again in the future.

in my profession you can get by without a degree but you have to work for ages and still pass a diploma at some point so i could have got to where i am now but it would have taken an awful lot longer than it has.

do a degree because you want to do one mate. don't get wrapped up in jobs n that, they aren't as important as people would have you believe :)

That said, neither are degrees (although if I had one I could have emigrated to Melbourne rather than staying here, so my life would have markedly different had I carried on with my 3rd year).

That's why I said do one because you want to. Education for its' own sake is a very worthwhile thing :)

Education because you think you should or something is probably a waste of everyone's time.

Unless you set on doing a degree I would think about it .Already done 2/3 of it so could finish it part time .Do you really want a degree?

on the: 'Education for its' own sake is a very worthwhile thing' front - I quite agree - but you certainly don't need to attend university to become educated. you can educate yourself to the same level and higher on your own or in many, many other ways.

:)

that is true but not everyone has that self discipline. i know i needed the structure of university to learn what i did.

true but it can be worthwhile to have your education stretched by being set challenging assignments etc.

I've given myself a huge education in many ways via books, the net and life experience. But I still feel a little limited in how I express my thoughts at times. I think a proper good go at higher education again would help this.
