Dilemma: finish degree or take new job

all makes sense... though fuck going into management tbh, already turned that down once and have no desire to be going around telling people what to do (part of the reason i jacked in sainsburys in the first place).

knew you'd say that :) see, we are related really, sometimes you're just like me :D

Students do not start to repay their loan until they are in full-time employment and earning a minimum of 15,000 per year.

or you could be born a few years earlier and not have to pay back a penny until you're earning about £25,000 and it rises every year :D

Sorry that's not helpful is it but I love sending back the form every year telling them to sod off once again

when did you start your first year? and how many years of study did you complete? did you finish your second year? how long was the original degree? 3/4years?

i started my first year of a german degree in 2002 but after a year (received all my loan payments) decided that german wasn't for me so restarted at the same uni in 2003 doing an english degree. It's complicated as originally German was a 4 year course but after a year of it i restarted doing a 3 year course... but it all added up to 4 years in the end anyway.

stop shining that lamp in his face, he's only just got up :(

right, you might have some problems getting another loan by the sounds of it - it depends on far too mant factors :D

give UWE's student advice centre a call and they can work it out for you :) I think you might have a year left but I can't be sure - even if you don't get the tuition fee loan you will still have access to the maintenance loan :)

thanks! just pmed you with all the info i had, all the advice is much appreciated! If the worst comes to the worst, I can fund myself through the year (savings etc) but would rather go for the loan obviously.

Go for the degree, the job may be with an ethical company but it's still retail and you said you wanted to get out of that.

I find the limits on funding utterly disgraceful if i'm honest. Whatever mistakes people made when they were young, if they want to finish a degree, they should be able to. Lack of a tuition fee loan may prevent someone being able to finish their studies :(

fuck the degree - not worth the paper they're written on...

any job that says you need a degree for - just lie and say you've got one.

they seldom check.

:)

this is what happens when the government decide they want everyone to go to university

oh no, hang on

:hmm:

what a load of rubbish.

not really - just my opinion.

I think strung out would benefit more from getting solid work experience behind him rather than accruing more debt seeking out a degree in a subject he may well not end up using.

degrees are not the be all and end all

How many years can you get lonas for? and How can you find out this info? :D

I thought it was only 3! :hmm:

you're assuming that people do degrees solely for the employment benefit.

that's not true of me, nor of many other people.

nevertheless, if i tried now to get a job as an archaeologist without a relevant degree i'd be laughed out of the door.

degrees are not the be all and end all
no I agree with this, they're not

they won't be the right thing for everyone and until this sodding government stops trying to make everyone go to uni we are in a weird situation

that said however degrees are not useless - its not a blanket thing like that

I for example wouldn't have got anywhere near where I am without one - not only that but I loved studying, I do love studying, I am passionate about it - so much so I'm doing it again

is that worthless too?

my overriding feeling is that degrees are in the main useless. More or less any job you get with a degree you can also get without one. There is usually more than one route to the job market place if you're a bit creative with how you get there or make sacrifices in other areas.

Of course if you want to study just for the sake of it/for your own derivative pleasure then so be it. I was simply offering an alternative point of view...

I'm gonna have to agree and disagree :D your right in some aresa a degree isn't an advantage, but it certainly isn't a disadvantage

but for many jobs, especially higher up the chain, its an essential

not necessarily - the higher up the chain you go the less people care what some qualification you got years ago, the more they care about your recent relevant work experiences are/were and what you achieved at work - not as some dickhead student years ago.

well...

you defo need a degree qualification to be a social worker.

*cries*

:(

depends on what chain :) in my work I wouldn't have got something much lower than I am without a degree :)
