Difficult to find a job while unemployed?

in a kind of "look look!!! its not my fault i can't get a job, its official" kind of way :D

man this woman keeps ringin me up and sending me jobs to apply for, I'm signed off sick an they want me to apply for a load of shitty jobs, of course I have pointed out on numerous occasions that no employer in the world ever is going to interview someone on the sick and decide to employ them and be willing to wait however long until you are fit enough to work again.

it's pointless, so I just throw the job descriptions in the bin. sorted. they cant fucking make me do it, I aint on the fucking dole.

1 in 3 (33%) of a representative sample of 750 employers drawn from all sectors of the economy say that they deliberately exclude people with a history of long-term sickness or incapacity when recruiting staff. Even amongst employers who do not exclude the long-term sick hardly any (only 3%) target them as part of their recruitment strategies.

And for people who have been on IB for a long time, employers’ concern about whether they are fit to work is compounded by the fact that many long-term IB claimants lack up to date skills and experience and may have lost the work habit. The survey also found:
  • 43% of employers surveyed think long-term IB claimants would be less productive at work
  • 60% think long-term IB claimants would be more prone to absence
  • 26% think long-term IB claimants have potential but 32% also think they would be less adaptable, and 45% that they would be less reliable
  • 17% question the potential teamwork ability of long-term IB claimants, 16% doubt their contribution to customer service, and 19% expect they would produce a lower standard of work.

Could someone PLEASE tell James Purnell this!

Trying to get back into work even when you haven't been ill (ie caring/ looking after children) still seems hard enough.

i was lucky. i got made redundant 5 months ago and was unemployed til 3 days ago. luckily, i walked into an interview wearing baggy jeans, skater trainers and t-shirt, and it just so happened that i was exactly what they were looking for

I was in this position from last April - September

I like the idea of going from earning shitloads to getting a tuppence every week. :D

if you do that then make sure you sign on. if you have savings >£16k or summat that makes it difficult. i was in that position for what ended up being 6 months last year and couldn't be bothered to go and queue and fill forms etc so sacrificed six months of tuppences...

If I had that time again I would:
1) quickly get a fun part time job and possibly a volunteering one, six months doing fuck all is really a waste when you see what you could have done and had fun doing
2) seriously consider going abroad. i ended up with just 1 month in India before my new job started having spent six months haemoraging savings in f'ing Baron's Court "working out what I wanted to do"

doing nothing is great for about 2 months, the feeling that you can do anything... eventually something changes, you get tired of explaining yourself to people, and then the confidence starts to go..

I think the best advice that I ignored was "don't even think about thinking about what you want to do next until you've spent at least 3 weeks on a beach"..

back to the OP tho', I do think people are more accepting and understanding of the situation whereby perfectly bright person for whatever reason hasn't worked for afew months

Wouldn't worry about there being some discrimination for people who are out of work or whatever. They'll look at your previous jobs, length of time and check up your references etc before making a decision. Sometmes people just leave jobs for whatever reason.

A lot to think about there! Cheers for the advice. I like the idea of doing a spot of bar work for a couple of months to keep me occupied!

Yes one thing i've always been told is that its better to look for a job from another job rather than looking for a job with no job.

You can always lie and say you've been travelling, although this can work against you if they ask for proof. I've got some long gaps on my CV where I was travelling, but the only times its been checked was when I worked for a bank/temped at one.

If it's any help, xanadu, I've been doing some recruiting/interviewing for posts at my place recently and the skills/experience you have are far more important than how long you've been unemployed.

Saying you've been 'jobseeking' and waiting for the right job to come up should be adequate if they start asking questions.

The job I'm doing now (for how much longer I dunno, restructuring & all that ) asked me about a 9 month gap in my 'employment history' - I said jobseeking/looking for the right job & it was fine. Good luck BTW.

Job seekers or the dole , is great if you like being treated like scum? Unless you have {real work history} to check , most companys wont' even look at your C.V. because most are made up by people in the benifits office or others like me . The post about the dentist by paulie Tandoori is wrong, you only get free treatment off the N.H.S. dentist? but in most parts of the U.K. the books are full, so no free treatment its a scam !! I worked part time free in commuity centre, a few years back so I know some of the nice people !!! who are force onto benifit lifestyle crap money with no hope for many. not a joke !!!

You might want to engage the old grey cells before typing. The fact that i posted that you are entitled to free dental treatement is actually correct - the fact that its difficult to find an NHS dentist to provide the treatment is another separate matter.

You losing your job Xan?! :( :(

Fuckin economy n shit.

Not yet. I seem to be pretty safe this time round. I've got a feeling there's going to be a few rounds of redundancies though, so I may be fine now, but I might not be next time round. I'm applying for a job at my old school tomorrow.

HI Pauli tandoori my point , whats the point if you cant' have it done{ free or not }? in wales N.H.S. dentist are as rare as rocking horse shit ," My brain has been bad for years due to life style" dont take it personal"

because otherwise you're arguing the wrong argument about the wrong problem. your problem is finding a NHS dentist. that has nothing to do with being unemployed and signing on. that happens to lots of people, in work and out of work.
