Difference between 'mean' and average?

broadly speaking ...

median = 1/2 way between the highest and lowest
mode = the most popular/ common result
mean = (is the sum of all the results)/ (the number of results) <-- this is what most people mean by average

so if the time it takes for a pair of rabbits to procreate is measure (in hrs) as

1,1,1,2,4,6,8,12

the mode is 1
the median is 6.5
the mean is 35/8 (or ~4.4)

In future, all mathematical concepts should be explained in terms of rabbits fucking.

You have a rabbit. Kill the rabbit. You now have no rabbits. The dead rabbit can, however, still be though of as having a useful value; perhaps you have a complex stew you need to work out the ingredients for. You'll need to breed the dead rabbit with itself... You can now use this rabbit to breed with a real number of rabbits but, because it's an imaginary rabbit, if you breed these combined rabbits with themselves you'll always end up with negative rabbits. :(
