Diesel or Petrol?

I know it's not the very top of the range, but still, it's pretty bad that there's no obvious way to tell that S6 apart from, well, every other Audi. Unless that was the idea and someone debadged it.

Also it's Cat D apparently.

They're great cars, but the biggest problem with owning an Audi that I can see is that every other person in the world will think you're a cock. Used to be BMW's, but Audi now hold the crown.

It does have an S6 badge on the back, plus the brakes have the snazzy calipers...

I like the idea that you can fuck off nearly everything you come across and still have the kids and mutt in the back.

But like the look of the A6 more.

First world probs and all that.

urban answer = outright racism

Real answer = 'twas Top Gear who denounced Audi as the new BMW, so...

Top Gear were only really saying what was happening out in the world. Drive on a motorway, see what % of the wankers tailgating are driving a car with rings on the grill...

It'll pass, the twats must be due for another brand change soon.

They are slowly being overtaken as fleet cars by the terrible Vauxhall Insignia, only reason being that the Vauxhalls are a lot cheaper with the same gadgets, shame they are ruined at 150k miles, stupid bean counters.

About five years ago a friend of mine (who has a PhD in mechanical engineering so probably knew what he was talking about) said he would not buy a diesel car. His argument was that not only are they more expensive to buy, but they need more maintenance (oil and filters need changing at least twice a year) than a petrol doing similar mileage. He also said that they are more polluting in terms of particulates and soot, if not through other pollutants. In his opinion it was better to buy a well looked after, if slightly older, petrol car as this would be cheaper all round.

He's right. The only possible reason to select a diesel over a petrol equivalent is if you fancy something like a new 7 series or A8 and can't face the calamitous depreciation of the petrol versions.

I had a diesel phase in the mid noughties (735d, 640d) but I've been rehabilitated now.

I switched from diesel back to petrol recently. From a turbo diesel which had plenty of torque to a small petrol car which as it happens goes along ok. But I have gone from a medium sized car which was comfortable at 80mph to a smaller car which isn't really happy above 70mph. This makes motorway journeys less relaxing than they used to be.

Wonder how Volkswagen's little episode with fiddled emissions in the US is gonna affect peoples choices re petrol v diesel

It might put people off VW as a brand, but money has a habit of talking and diesels tend to give better MPG and at the moment at least tend to be cheaper to tax.

What people should consider is the fact many UK cities are considering taking action against diesel cars. Only London has anything firm planned at the moment, and then not until 2020. But if I were choosing a new/nearly new car right now today and planned to keep it for a while, I'd go petrol.
