Diesel at £1.29 a litre :-O

The way we consider driving is becoming more of a luxury, which is what it is.
I own a car for holidays only - on the basis that it's cheaper and more convenient than 2 to 4 weeks of car hire. Driving to work in it fills me with dread.

I would buy for occasional leisure if I had off road storage where I could buy tax for 12 months and then get refunds after 1 months use. SORN it for the rest of the time.

Currently it would have to be on a public highway which means I would waste the tax just having it sitting there.

That's how it is for me. 400 quid tax and insurance - compares reasonably with 2 weeks' car hire.

The theory is that it will also open up my social life and help me get stuck in to fixing my house up.

Just because it costs me over a quid a day to park it there doesn't encourage me to drive it - it would be bonkers - if only in terms of the health benefits.

It would be nice not to have to take up a parking space though - doubtless some of my neighbours hate me for it - but I've lived there for 24 years now.
