Both the NHS and local councils fund charities who do this sort of work, and who are often in need of volunteers. You could contact them (google for addresses), and ask if they can provide you details.
Perhaps a better way would be to track down a local Volunteer Centre, which often co-ordinate, support and train volunteers for different charities.
