Did your parents disapprove of ITV children's programmes in the 70's/80's?

Us kids actually banned our mum from watching Grange Hill as she used to go mad accusing us getting up to the the same antics.

I do remember her writing to Lenny Henry about some sketch she found offensive on Tiswas and him saying hello to her the following week on-air.

Mad Jamaican mums, bless :D

ITV was generally considered common in our house. Along with Blackpool and the South Bay at Scarborough.

Same here, along with Tesco.:D I still don't like Tesco, though I like Lidl and pound shops and have seriously considered a pilgrimage to the nearest Wilkinson's in Penge so that's how much of a shopping snob I am. :o

What was it with ITV? I don't think it was the ads, because although not exposing children to commercial brain-washing is a good thing, I'm not sure parents thought like that back in the 70s (unless they were early adopters of the Viz 'Modern Parents' lifestyle and/or didn't want their kids to fall prey to The Man).

It wasn't just kids' programmes - there was a general perception that ITV was 'common'!

Was it because the BBC back then had a straight, establishment, earnest image & ITV was brasher and more populist?

There was a general 'you should be outside on your bike not watching this rubbish' attitude from my Mum. My Dad couldn't have given a fuck. I can't remember being told I couldn't watch anything, although there was much tutting and rolling of eyes when video nasties came out and all my mates piled round to watch Zombie Flesh Eaters and stuff.

A mate of mine had proper Viz modern parents, though. I was staying round hers and we were banned from watching Tizwaz. My folks had just got divorced, though, and my Dad lived just down the road so we went round his to watch it. I remember being very pleased to note that he already had it on when we got there.
