Their destruction of Knockin' at Heaven's Door was probably the worst of their crimes, but their charge sheet was roughly as long as the one read out when Eli Wallach is about to be hanged in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.

I disagree. I believe their massacre of "knockin' on Heaven's Door" was the second-worst thing they've done.
Writing, recording and releasing "One In A Million" takes precedence as the worst.

Is that the one that took a decade and the GDP of a small nation to record? I didn't know he'd got around to releasing it?

No 'One in a Million' was a track with some racist and homophobic lyrics of the 'Lies' EP they released following 'Appetite for Destruction'.

wasn't that a piss take against everything in it?

but are you sure you're not just saying that because you're..

No – cool doesn't come into it.

I agree with Hipipol's sentiments, even if I don't have a cock to dip into boiling horse's piss.

Hated them at the time; thought it was stupid music... still do, but can listen to it with some enjoyment now...

That's the missing option..
"hated them then, but don't mind 'em now"

I actually made myself perfectly clear on the 'other thread': Axl Rose 'dances' just like my mum did in the 60's, only my mum was prettier, danced better, and was free of visible facial herpes and/or cold sores.

Actually, my biggest problem with G 'n R back in the late 80's was meeting some really good looking woman, hitting it off with them brilliantly in a bar, knowing the night was gonna end with a good bonk...then finding out they were Axl Rose fans. No amount of substance abuse could reverse the psychic/physiological/genital disappointment I'd experience after that fucking bombshell...

Ah - I'm thinking of his "new" still unreleased album then. Can't wait for that to hit the lower realms of the charts :)

Shreddy said "bonk" :)

I know...very kind/lite of me, considering I was talking about female G 'n R fans of the late 80's. I guess one 'had to be there', so to speak. It was anything but pretty...

Same here. I hated them at the time - my metal/rock heroes when I was a teenager were Thin Lizzy and Hanoi Rocks, and to me G N'R were just ripping off the best bits of Hanoi and adding in a load of unwanted spandex metal and some extremely dubious values. Many years later, I can appreciate the brilliance of their best songs - Sweet Child O'Mine is a spectacular single, Paradise City is pretty good, and I have a soft spot for November Rain, but only because I enjoy ridiculous, overblown, theatrical nonsense every so often - and I can ignore their crappy stuff. Plus Slash is cool, and he had an excellent pinball machine, which raised him immensely in my estimation. But generally they were idiots and should be remembered as such.

According to my little sis (who is a metalhead) the pisstake card was only played as a justification after just about every minority group had taken a turn at tearing Axl a new arsehole.

Nah, "One in a Million" was GnR's contribution to ethnic and gender harmony. :)

They played the Monsters of Rock ( :o ) one year when I was there (about '87/'88 ?). The bill was crap that year, but they were the crappest, and I purposely spent their set in the beer tent. Iron Maiden were headlining, and I fully admit that at the time I "hated" them too to be contrary because they were too popular for my taste, but they were really good on the day.

GnR was just pure, genuine hatred, which has faded to vague dislike/contempt.

That's because he was, and always has been, even more of a gimp-looking motherfucker than Ron Mael.

Not that we'd ever judge someone on what they look like, when they're a superb guitarist.

Oh no, not here on good old Urban...

I love Guns N' Roses and despite the tunes were never as gritty post Appetite, they still managed to rock the stage whenever they played live.

In some ways its a shame it all got bloated and Axl's ego pratically alienated the rest of the band and caused it to split up BUT...in a way I imagine nothing would have ever topped Appetite or evenUse Your Illusion I/II so the band had probably reached its peak.

However....Chinese Democracy has been 10 years in the making, and holds the record for the most expensive album never to be released. Axl certainly knows how to take being a rock star to new extremes and for pure comedy value alone I applaud him

They did have a real air of danger about them it has to be said. I always prefered Hanoi Rocks, but GNR did some good stuff in the early days.

it's just comedy really isnt it, guitar solo on a clifftop and that, karaoke music

liked it at the time, but i was only a kid never would have bought anything

Oh, was that what I was doing?

Odd.

I thought I was merely making a humourous aside.

Perhaps you should get a sense of humour and not be quite so ready to stand in judgement yourself.

And what the fuck does his skill with a guitar have to do with why he gets no love?

Ya spoon.

Because everyone who's remotely referred to guitars and goodness on the thread mentioned Slash.

Because that's specifically what I was getting at, he gets no love for his guitar playing. He's a guitarist, you see.

Ya fork.

The other bit was being intentionally silly, and requires no further discussion. Although, to pick on Mr S for his fashion sense when Slash, Axl and Stephen were about does seem unduly harsh.

I mean... ok, it's a bad hat...*

But...

I bet there are people here who've worn a waistcoat since that pic was taken, but we know only Firky has a Jesus LOL t-shirt and he'd never wear a kilt and a bandana at the same time.

I can't find a picture of Adler, but I'll say the following words... Bleached. Blonde. Poodle. Perm.

Nuff said, innit?

;)

*I may have been seen holding a Tele in that manner :o

When Appetite came out I couldn't escape it for the life of me , I hated it.

I'd play football down the park on the weekend and it would be playing from a tape deck placed down by the goal. Mates would come to the pub with it screaming out of their Walkmans.

These days I see it as one of the greatest hard rock albums to grace this planet.

The rest of GNR output after Appetite is dodgy , well dodgy.
