Did you ever see The Cult?

Actually I dispute the wording of this question because I didn't "go to see the Cult", I went to see Spear of Destiny and New Model Army, and the Cult (I mean Southern Death Cult) happened to be playing too.

where/when was this? sounds like something i might have been at

been sorting through some records this evening, and was confused to discover i own three copies of 'she sells sanctuary' on 12". wtf? :hmm:

Yes of course I did, I'm 'that age' (or older )

Several times, in fact, but hardly ever intentionally. They always seemed to be supporting other dark acts I wanted to see. :D

I can't remember exactly where - might have been Brockwell Park in fact. It was one of the series of outdoor gigs that Ken put on in the dying days of the GLC.

I have feeling I might have seen this too. Definitely in Brockwell Park. Early 90s. Were The Damned and Strawberry Switchblade also on the bill?

I was going to answer yes to the OP, but then remembered it was The Sisters Of Mercy I'd seen. :o:o

ETA - there should be a poll option for 'I might have done, but if you can remember the 90s, you weren't really there'.

China Drum were obsessed with the Cult, they'd watch live DVDs on the tour bus constantly and dream of the drummer being able to slide on his drum stool down a big slide from the back of the stage
I read a book by a journo who spent some time touring with China Drum and one of their running jokes was abour the absurdity of Love Removal Machine. "I need some fags, I'm off to the.... Fag Removal Machayenne!!!" etc.

yeah NVP, some of us only saw them by accident. you made a point of it.

my husband is trying to make me call you a tit.

I can't argue with your husband's unfaltering logic. :D

Right. Now we're all being confessional and shit who's going to admit to seeing the following:

The Sisters Of Mercy
- for about 10 minutes at Reading after they reformed with that tit out of Sigue Sigue Sputnik in them. I would've loved to see the (ahem) 'classic' lineup, at the time, mind. :o:D
Theatre Of Hate / Spear Of Destiny TOH supporting The Clash.
The Mission Yes, Reading. Quite enjoyed it. :o
Fields Of The Nephilim No.
Balaam And The Angel?! Fuck no!

I went to their first ever gig at the Lyceum in 1984. It was massive, for a first gig, mainly off the back of southern death cult and death cult. it was later issued as a live album with early copies of the first album, Dream Time.

Went to see them many times after that. I loved that first album, the second one was ok, the third was well dodgy to say the least and i dont think i have heard anything after that.

I think that i liked them for their punk (goth?) roots and perhaps gave them a little more leeway than they deserved. The more they wandered into metal teritory the more of a joke they became. I like a bit of metal now and again but from about 87 on they were bordering on spinal tap without the irony.

This mainly. Dreamtime and Love were good albums then it went tits up. Moya & Fatman (SDC) and God's Zoo (DC) as well as Spriritwalker, Ressurection Joe, Go West and Horse Nation were epic tunes to a 17 year old back then and I still think they sound good today.

Saw them in June 85 and a couple of times after that. Astbury ended up as singer of The Doors for a while :D

God’s Zoo

Moya

Better than most music that was around 25 years ago imo.

I quite like Sisters of Mercy. I wouldn't listen to them out of choice, but I like the one that goes 'ing now ing now, we got the most of motion baby', indie club classic that one

I thought Spear of Destiny were a dub band? :hmm:

Fields of the Nephilim were fucking terrible though. I once stupidly bought an album by them because some twat heard the God Machine and said 'It sounds like Fields of the Nephilim and bollocks'.

I also bought an Iron Butterfly album on the same basis.

That was better than Fields of the Nephilim though

I never saw em live, but 'She sells Sanctuary' is great for pissed goth club dancing after about 1am!

Balaam And The Angel?! !

Yes to all except the last, thank god.

I am embarrassed to say I last saw FoTN just over year ago - well, it was a freebie and I was curious........

(they are still bollocks btw )

Recently got Electric from a charity shop and it's as great as I remember it, never saw them live though although I did see some band with someone out the cult and someone from the Alarm and someone else.

And unfortunately I saw the Mission 3 times and even shoke hand with Wayne Hussey at a secret gig at Marquee....I was young etc etc

August 4th 1984, brockwell park. Was there myself had a memorable weekend, was offered floor space by a local which seemed great till he tried to fuck us. We were saved by his housemate, Molly The Queen Of Brixton! Then we tried sleeping in bus stops, in the park and were eventually given space by some fruitarian squatters who took pity on us.

I dont recall the Cult being there though. Just googled it and the line up was.... Damned, Spear of Destiny, The Fall, Banjamin Zephaniah, New Model Army, Joolz, Brilliant, Strawberry Switchblade, Pleasure and the Beast, Hi Jinx and The Opposition (maybe we are talking about different gigs).

You can find a list of those gigs here

SOM.... yes, several times, but as support band or at festivals, never set out to see them, never a fan

SOD..... many many times, all over the country, loved them

Mission... quite a few times, mainly at festivals but did set out specifically to see them on occasion if they came through south wales.

The Neph ... yes, again support/festivals. Bloody dreadful

Ballaam ... see Neph

I think I went to more than one of these so am probably conflating the two.

Actually, I'm not convinced it was 1984 because I would have been pretty young then. I remember it being the year the GLC went, which I see was 1986.

That was definitely the one I went to.

What a great link BTW (goes all misty-eyed with nostalgia).

I saw them in Poole about 1986 ish. I was probably very pissed and dont remember much about it.
I found an old album the other day, Electric . I quiet liked it .:)
