Actually I dispute the wording of this question because I didn't "go to see the Cult", I went to see Spear of Destiny and New Model Army, and the Cult (I mean Southern Death Cult) happened to be playing too.

I can't remember exactly where - might have been Brockwell Park in fact. It was one of the series of outdoor gigs that Ken put on in the dying days of the GLC.where/when was this? sounds like something i might have been at
- but I didn't ever see go and see em!

I read a book by a journo who spent some time touring with China Drum and one of their running jokes was abour the absurdity of Love Removal Machine. "I need some fags, I'm off to the.... Fag Removal Machayenne!!!" etc.China Drum were obsessed with the Cult, they'd watch live DVDs on the tour bus constantly and dream of the drummer being able to slide on his drum stool down a big slide from the back of the stage
yeah NVP, some of us only saw them by accident. you made a point of it.
my husband is trying to make me call you a tit.

I went to their first ever gig at the Lyceum in 1984. It was massive, for a first gig, mainly off the back of southern death cult and death cult. it was later issued as a live album with early copies of the first album, Dream Time.
Went to see them many times after that. I loved that first album, the second one was ok, the third was well dodgy to say the least and i dont think i have heard anything after that.
I think that i liked them for their punk (goth?) roots and perhaps gave them a little more leeway than they deserved. The more they wandered into metal teritory the more of a joke they became. I like a bit of metal now and again but from about 87 on they were bordering on spinal tap without the irony.

I can't argue with your husband's unfaltering logic.
Right. Now we're all being confessional and shit who's going to admit to seeing the following:
The Sisters Of Mercy - for about 10 minutes at Reading after they reformed with that tit out of Sigue Sigue Sputnik in them. I would've loved to see the (ahem) 'classic' lineup, at the time, mind.
Theatre Of Hate / Spear Of Destiny TOH supporting The Clash.
The Mission Yes, Reading. Quite enjoyed it.
Fields Of The Nephilim No.
Balaam And The Angel?! Fuck no!

yeh, a few times.
I also worked with them in the mid-90s on some reissues. Ian Astbury is a lovely lovely bloke.
But The Cult are wank![]()

I think I went to more than one of these so am probably conflating the two.August 4th 1984, brockwell park. Was there myself had a memorable weekend, was offered floor space by a local which seemed great till he tried to fuck us. We were saved by his housemate, Molly The Queen Of Brixton! Then we tried sleeping in bus stops, in the park and were eventually given space by some fruitarian squatters who took pity on us.
I dont recall the Cult being there though. Just googled it and the line up was.... Damned, Spear of Destiny, The Fall, Banjamin Zephaniah, New Model Army, Joolz, Brilliant, Strawberry Switchblade, Pleasure and the Beast, Hi Jinx and The Opposition (maybe we are talking about different gigs).
You can find a list of those gigs here
