Yeah I had school dinners all through infants and juniors. I can't think of anyone who didn't. Looking back it wasn't the best of food but the only time I refused something was when some dinner lady tried to force me to eat black pudding. I threw up over the table and her.

Never had school dinners - I was brought up vegetarian so there wasn't any option at the time (late 1980s). It was ace though, my mum and I would make loads of stuff on Sunday (cakes, pasties, little veggie pies or quiches etc) at home and freeze them, then I'd take whatever I fancied :) I don't remember anyone thinking I was weird because of it, but I was uber-cool at school and got away with most things (something I have struggled to recapture ever since, tbh :( )

Yep. They were horrible most of the time though, with the desserts a particular horror - fuck off with the semolina or rice pudding with a dollop of cheap jam.

I'm not really a fussy sort, but I still can't eat coleslaw to this day after a couple of force feeding/dramatic upchuck incidents. Like you I used to look forward to the chips and the grimly fascinating fried items that I didn't get at home mind - the day the evil dinner ladies conned us by serving us parsnip chips designed to look like normal chips still rankles.

That's the sort of thing my mum does

Yeah :(

Mine would secretly sneak meat products into stuff, get me to eat it, then say "So did you like that, then?" "Mm" "Well,it had MEAT in it!". I got a bit fucked off in the end: to this day, I'm generally suspicious of soups and that kind of thing because of the potential for them to contain meat or meat stock. Her faves were lentil soup into which she'd put ham, and risotto, which I'd spend hours trying to pick the bits of meat out, only to be told once I'd succeeded and eaten the stone-cold remainder, that she'd made it with meat stock anyway.

Actually, on reflection, maybe school dinners weren't quite so bad after all...at least they weren't trying to con anyone! :)

I don't just mean then.

I mean she still fucking does it

(E.g. making about 10 roast parsnips for every roast potato on christmas day, and forcing you to hunt desperately for that last roast spud fix amongst the parsnippy foulness)

School diners was cpretty shit for me tbh.... When there was pork products served my meal would be a pile of grated cheese and plum tomatoes cold

Ugh. That sounds quite punitive "Feh, we'll show the red sea pedestrians where their strange cultural ways get 'em. I know! Got any anchovies? Great, mash 'em up with last week's sprouts, that'll learn 'em for having strange food tastes".

I hated meals times at school, I used to get told off for eating with my hands, because it'as not 'good manners' and when they asked if I would eat like that at home I'd say yes?? Obviously I was giving cheek getting me into more trouble with the dinner staff...

My infants and juniors school was particularly shit if you looked foreign, if your parents spoke any other language other than English... you automatically got sent to 'remedials' with all the other brown kids

I was in primary during the late 60's ..... the grub was excellent ... rarely had chips ... all fresh veggies ....think we had an adventurous head cook ...occasionally we would have Hungarian goulash with rice , even remember an egg curry ...... but the mince curry was my fave ...had big juicy sultana's in it .....

Another difference then that we didn't queue ... sat on table of 8 with the older ones on one end ..food was delivered in bowls or catering trays to the table and we then dished it out between us , the tables had to be cleared by us too .....easier for the staff and improved social skills too I guess ..
