I figured it would happen but not this soon.

I am quite happy about it.

Uh, what's happening CC?
They still call it the White House
But that's a temporary condition, too.
Can you dig it, CC?

I just find it depressing that race is still meant to be so important :(:(

he's just another millionaire who went to all the right schools and kissed all the right arses. people are falling for the racist shit in 2008

Couldn't get anyone over to your bitching thread, eh?

So you came over here.

If you want, I can get some coffee delivered to you over there.

Otherwise, you won't mind all that much if I ignore this stuff from you, just for tonight?

One year ago today or thereaboutsish...

Framing it simply in terms of black and white, did you think a black man would actually be elected as president of the U S of A in 2008?

Poll-a-comin'...

More than a year ago, when I first saw Obama in 2004 give his now well known speech at the DNC I thought then he'd run and win in 2008.

Gosh. Not just that he was capable of being president but that America would elect him??

I'm realising tonight how little I believed it was possible. :(

e2a but :)

Who is? I don't understand what you mean...

you think it's great that the president of america is black

do we have to have a hispanic and north asian and native american and female and disabled and south asian and arabic and indina and eskimo etc president before everyone is equal?

he's just another millionaire career politician. the fact that he's black doesn't help anyone from any race imo.

Don't be daft.

. Really? Literally, until today I didn't think it was possible for a black person to break through this world's (i.e. this era's) glass ceiling. Why not? Because of the racism I've experienced and seen.

What's your experience? How come you don't think his colour means anything about race? (This isn't a challenge - it's just a question...)

Well done Obama. And he's become President despite all the negative shit the Republicans tried to dump on him. Incredible, let's see if he lives up to the hype. Go President Obama. :)

i'm not being daft

he didn't say one thing about eradicating racism in the police, cutting american military spending, reversing the corporatisation of state schools, sorting out the judicial system, illegalising the arms trade, sorting out legal aid and the judicial system in general

loads of stuff

i don't see why everyone is celebrating the fact that he's black. i find it incredibly depressing that skin colour is so important in this day and age

and even more depressing on here tbh

Because no black person could be elected, because Obama is the 'wrong' black person, or another reason?

I thought, if any black person, him, as he's politically smooth enough, but I really did think that his colour would negate that.

Ha.

Because he seems too 'Muslim,' whether he is or not, and because I'm just bloody cynical, really. The US did re-elect Bush, after all.

Honestly, although race was a big issue in this election, going on comments I've read from ordinary people and even white supremacists, I don't think it was the main one. The outcome, however, will be extremely important when it comes to race. The US had segregated schools within my own lifetime - and now it has a President who is not white. That's pretty amazing.

isitme, FWIW, this man was not born privileged. He isn't exactly Lord Snooty.

White person in 'race is not an issue' shocka!

Yep. I watched his speech and just felt it right then, he would run and he would win. Read up a little about him after that and it just convinced me more.

Even the idea that it may not have been the main one is extraordinary to me. When did that happen??!! And especially after the US proved itself capable of re-electing Bush!

Yay you :)

a black guy won the F1 tournament as well. black people go to private schools etc

I just find it really sad that it's meant to be such a great thing that he's black. I don't go on about how great it is that I have had managers who are black, or how I was working for koreans for years. They are just people, making a thing about the colour of someones skin is just bollocks imo. even if it's in a good way

My friends who are black aren't 'my black friends' they are just 'my friends'. and they are all different colours anyway lol

If Obama was a black power activist i might feel differently, but he just strikes me as yet another politician who will no doubt be continuing the same cycle of oppression that america seems to be based on so I find making a thing about his race a bit sad. even if it is in a 'YAY!! a black guy!!' way

I dunno, I might be being a prick about it. I mean it might be different since you are black cos like you said racism is still very real and american presidents are always old white guys etc
And must mean something to see a country that had laws that were literally designed to exclude black people have a black president

I just find it a bit sad cos he is a millionaire career politician and the colour of his skin sort of comes second to that for me because I don't treat people differently or look at them differently according to their skin colour. maybe i should given the history and so on. but thats another debate

I just watched that Change is Gonna Come link that Rutita put up and it made me feel all teary.

My first 'knowledge' of black people as a child was watching 'Roots'. It's a good day.

:)

I'm 28 Mation

I am completely prepared to be wrong btw

I was getting a bit confrontational about the whole thing because I saw about 10 predictable threads saying yay obama and basically I don't think he will change anything and I find it sad that his skin colour is such an issue

It shouldn't be a big deal, but: it is.

Watch the speech in chicago. If you see any of the crowd shots in LA etc, with black people in the shot, many of them have tears in their eyes.

It shouldn't be a big deal, but it is.

Yes you are.

Yes, it should be meaningless but it isn't.

There are people alive today who, as children, sat on the knees of grandparents born into slavery in the US. The world isn't going to suddenly change for black people, racism hasn't been swept into oblivion tonight, people may have voted against Bush instead of for Obama, but this matters.

Barack Hussein Obama is the most powerful man in the world. And that is something.

ok fair play

i don't want to fight about this if it means a lot to you.
