Did anyone else used to get excited by the numberplate change on 1 August?

Me too - I still get excited when I see a MW, TC or CD identifier (Wiltshire, Bath/Bristol, Brighton respectively: places I have lived long enough to know the identifiers) on a car in London and check to see if I recognise the garage name on the numberplate

My Australian girlfriend is still amazed that I can tell where a car comes from and its age (and Jusali normally the make and model too!) from the letters and numbers on the numberplate - its all very sad I know but years of reading Autocar and Motor, What Car, watching Top Gear and going to motorshows in my youth mean I have a lot of knowledge of cars stored away!

For those who have no idea what we're talking about there is information on the different registration plate schemes at http://www.londonbusroutes.net/miscellaneous/regs.htm

I'm impressed with myself that I can tell where cars in Ireland come from, but I've absolutely no idea in this country :D

I like to spot the new cars, I usually make note of the first one I see. :)

Yes, can't say I get excited but I make a mental note to myself when I see the first one after the change. So on September 1 (or shortly after) I'll make a mental note about the first of the 59-plate cars I see.

Off topic ... About 3 years ago I was in France and parked on a car park next to a Brtish car same as mine (colour, model, etc) and decided to look for a garage name on the back window to see where it came from. There wasn't one so I looked at the tax disc - it had been taxed in a village less than five miles from where I live

The irish number plates at the most simple to read in Europe. Year - Area - Reg number.
