DFS Sofas

So popular wisdom has it that DFS sell crap sofas. Is this true? Have any of you ever had a sofa from them? Was it any good?

If everyone knows they are rubbish how do they stay in business? Someone must be buying them.

No idea how good or otherwise they are. Only thing I ever saw (that I liked) on their site was nearly £1K.

If I pay that kinda money for something I expect it to have an engine and wheels(2 or 4)

I recall that they were in trouble for using dwarves in their ads, or photoshopping normal people into fun size, or building gigantic sofas as props - anyway, some chicanery which meant that you'd hand over your credit card expecting a giant chaise-longue and then find yourself with a footstool.

Madamvs sister ended up having to send back one (or two) sofas from DFS because they were so shit. When we were sofa shopping the DFS ones seemed quite cheap and badly finished.

Take it back, wouldbe!

My posey shop one got a bit crap after about 4/5 years. The cushions used to need replumping after a few weeks, now it's a few hours.

Was it expensive, though. Maybe it's like Ikea. You can find some handsome, solid furniture there but it's not in the cheap range.

This is not necessarily a bad thing for me. If I sit with my back against the back of a lot of sofas I am left with my legs sticking straight out in the air in front of me.

It is NOT an elegant look.

It’s a misconception that DFS sells sofas, they sell finance with a ‘heavily over priced, but discounted sofa’ thrown in.

so popular wisdom would have it. But would a cash buyer get a crap sofa or a good sofa for extra extra discount for cash?

I've never actually been in the shop but sometimes see pics of ones I like.

No, but I understand their [finance] business model, and know you can do a lot better elsewhere if you are a cash buyer.

Like car dealers, places like that make a lot more money from you through finance than if you buy cash. We didn't get that great a discount when we bought our sofas cash from furniture village. Might be worth getting them on finance then paying it off as soon as the interest free period runs out if it will get you more discount.

Presumably this was on one order, not that she sent one back and when she bought another sofa from them at a later date she also had to send that back?

I'm a bit hazy on the details but I think she sent one back, got another then sent that back too, I can check with madamv. Basically, they just warned me off them. The high-end ranges might be better but if you're looking for a bargain I'd go to Ikea.

You may have a point about high-end. I have a wardrobe from Ikea. My mother was very impressed with how proper and solid it is. But that's because it cost 4 times as much as my other ikea wardrobe in the spare room. If I'd wanted to spend that much in the first place I probably would have widened my search of retailers first.

It is, weltweit.

We got a DFS sofa 'cos of the interest free credit, and the sale, and it's fine. No noticeable weaknesses, leather is a decent quality. Obviously there are going to be better sofas out there, but in a choice between all the cheap places, interest free credit swung it for us.

Long lead times, mind. They're made to order in China.

What if DFS had a sofa you really liked and Harvey's sofas were vomititious?

Well i love my two big Italian leather* sofas from Harveys.

But they might be too big for ya. :p

* Made in an Italian factory and not made in china out of the cured skins of Italians.

I looked at DFS before I bought mine. I wanted leather, so it would be difficult for slacker me to trash. It was the DFS designs that put me off. All "sofary" if that makes any sense. Ended up getting IKEA. The buying and delivery was a total pain in the arse, and now it seems I can't put the legs back on (some weird differential expansion) having moved. Otherwise a bargain.*

* As posts go, giving personal experiences that help other people make informed buying decisions, this is piss poor.

That's what we did when we bought a DFS sofa 6 years ago, it's a 3-seater leather one and is still going strong now despite 3 kids and a cat. The finish is getting a little bit sad in a couple of places but given what it's had to put up with I think that's fair enough

I bought two leather sofas from DFS in 2001. They have lasted pretty well considering all the wear they get, although they are grubby (I don't know what possessed me to buy cream leather) and the cushions in the one we use most are really flat now (and can't be plumped up/turned over as they are sewn in).

I don't think I would buy anything from there again though - I think for the money you can get better stuff elsewhere. The interest free thing is handy though, I guess that's why they're so popular.

I have had a DFS sofa for two years now and it's a really good, comfy sofa. The dog loves it.

I got it on finance, but paid it off in time, so cost me nothing finance wise.

Though, I am always getting letters telling me I can have an instant pre-approved loan with the DFS finance company as I am such a "good customer"
