Red Son Superman

Try google image searching for "stray toasters" to see pages from a comic book that's very far from the common look.

I know what you mean, but it's balanced by the brilliance of characters like Herr Starr and Arseface. Jesse himself is a walking cliche, as is Cassidy but the rest are all good and the scale of the moral depravity in the whole series makes it a really fun read imo.

True. To be fair to it I haven't got up to Starr again yet.

There is loads of fat to chop so I for one might like to see it as a film if they drop the right bits.

I hope they keep in the stuff about Jesse's upbringing. Some of that stuff is so twisted it's like an art form.

I think I'll go for DareDevil: Man Without Fear, next.

Has anyone read it? I'm very (very) impressed with Frank Miller both as a writer and artist. I've also ordered Coraline by Gaiman.

Then I can consider a large volume like SandMan which does sound interesting.

Millers quite the crypto-fascist. I'm informed.

I have a copy of Sin City that I nicked from Pentonville Jail library. The stark B&W style is good.

You've not looked at enough graphic novels :p

There's a common style, but it's by no means universal.

I've looked at shit loads of comics the great many of which are primitive story telling at best. Sorry graphic novels. That angular over detailed, over dramatic style, I find tiresome. I got over it for the Watchmen, but would have preferred that in non-graphics form, just Moore probably couldn't write for toffee.

I feel that they are ostensibly for people who lack an imagination, created by people who have occasionally good ideas can draw but can't write.

A picture tells a thousand words but I am always left cold. I'm not going to look at more. I have an imagination and it works, its more detailed, its more vivid, its more involving than anything a comic artists can impress on any page, its part of me and I don't like leaving it out. I would prefer those thousand words written on a page by someone skilful at writing them than someone skilful at drawing them.

The reaction is in part down to the fanbois bullshit adoration when someone actually creates a 1/2 decent one. They read 1000000000 diabolically shit comics, so when the odd decent one is release its given god like status, makes me want to vomit.

I personally think Alan Moore is a pretentious twat who has taken the above fanbois adoration to heart and crawled a bit too far up his own arse.

Just started on this bit on the toilet this morning. It's picking up. Not sure what the christians are going to think about god siding with Jessies Grandma.

You don't like comics - we get it.

...'s why I just think the whole thing is unfilmable, really. If Hollywood got shit scared doing His Dark Materials, then no way will anyone green light Preacher.
